WESTCHESTER COUNTY, FLORIDA: A Florida man was sentenced to 20 years behind bars on Friday, March 17 for the brutal rape and murder of a 25-year-old woman nearly 20 years ago. Christopher Gonzalez discarded the body of Angel Serbay on the side of a parkway after he sexually assaulted and strangled her to death in 2005.

Westchester County Judge Robert Neary's sentencing of Gonzalez, 41, leaves him in a New York State penitentiary where he will spend several decades, as per the press release from the Westchester District Attorney’s Office, reported Law and Crime.

'The years of waiting have taken a toll'

Before the Naples native was handed down the jail term, a victim impact statement was read by Serbay's mother. She said, "While I am grateful that her murderer, Christopher Gonzalez, was eventually caught and am thankful that law enforcement never gave up on catching him, the years of waiting have taken a toll on me and have been excruciating," she said before adding, "I do not forgive Christopher Gonzalez. I believe him to be an evil, ruthless, soulless man."

According to authorities, the body of the Yonkers mother who was strangled to death on September 3, 2005, was thrown on the shoulder of Greensburgh's Sprain Brook Parkway after the body was wrapped in a sheet. A passerby spotted her remains and informed the New York State Police.

Another rape and murder victim

Following the investigation into Serbay's death, the New York City Police Department and NYSP discovered a connection with the murder of another woman in the Bronx in 2000. Dora Delvalle Almontaser, a 19-year-old woman who was house-sitting for her uncle, was raped and murdered with a telephone cord. From the crime scene and the victim, cops retrieved fingerprints and fluids which did not find any matches at the time. However, a "John Doe" profile was created by police based on the presumed murderer's DNA.

Though the DNA evidence from Serbay's and Almontaser's bodies matched the killer's DNA, it did not match any profiles in the databases of law enforcement and the murders became two cold cases. However, the murder case of Almontaser was reopened by a Bronx detective in November 2017 who ran the suspected killer's fingerprint through the database and found a match this time with Gonzales, who was arrested for driving without a license eight months before. He was released after a bond payment of $500.

While Serbay's murder probe continued, Gonzalez was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Almontaser. For Serbay's murder, he was indicted in May 2019 in Westchester County and was charged with one count each of rape in the first degree and criminal sexual act in the first degree, two counts of murder in the first degree, and three counts of murder in the second degree. He pleaded guilty to killing both women in December 2022 and will be serving 20 years behind the bars for each count, reported Law and Crime.
