Chloe X Halle hailed 'Queens' as they kick off NFL season wearing t-shirts of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor
R&B sister duo Chloe X Halle kicked off the NFL season for 2020 with their performance of the National Anthem before the Kansas City Chiefs-Houston Texans game on Thursday night (September 10).
The pair took the moment to make a statement, both wearing custom white T-shirts with Halle Bailey wearing the face of George Floyd on her T-shirt and Chloe Bailey wearing Breonna Taylor on hers. Chloe X Halle filmed their rendition of the Star Spangled Banner before the broadcast, remotely from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Their statement comes in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and protests seeking justice for the deaths of both Floyd and Taylor. Floyd was killed during an arrest by the Minneapolis police in May after a white officer kept his knee on his neck for more than eight minutes. Taylor, who was an EMT from Louisville, Kentucky, was shot multiple times by local police after they executed a no-knock search warrant in the middle of the night while she was sleeping.
Additionally, on August 23, Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old African American man, was shot and seriously injured by a police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The officer shot at Blake seven times during an arrest, with four of the shots hitting Blake. Incidents such as these have led to nationwide protests with the BLM movement even reaching other parts of the world. Celebrities such as Halsey, Ariana Grande and athletes from many sports have also been stirred to participate in the protests.
For their performance, numerous fans on Twitter have been sharing their support for their performance. "Brought tears to my eyes!" said a fan while another wrote, "I mean come on now they are the moment."

During their performance, the Chiefs were on the sidelines, most of them standing while some knelt and others linked arms. The Texans, however, decided to remain in the locker room during the anthem and entered the field later. Then both teams met in the middle of the filed and linked arms to signal a Moment of Unity.
