For fans of the 2000 stop motion animated comedy film ‘Chicken Run’, the wait is over. Two decades after the original film, now a cult classic, a sequel has been announced -- a sequel whose whispers have been floating around for ages now.

Netflix took to Twitter on Tuesday, June 23, and announced, “POULTRY NEWS: Exactly 20 years to the day since the original was released, we can confirm there will be a ‘Chicken Run’ sequel coming to Netflix!! Produced by @aardman, production is expected to begin next year. Eggsellent.”

No release date for ‘Chicken Run 2’ has been announced as of yet. Watch this space for more information.

The 2000 film centered around a group of chickens who lived on a farm run by the Tweedys. Fearing their impending doom, they tried and failed to escape several times. Finally, after several tries, they managed to escape the farm after building a plane. They flew into their freedom and landed on an island free of humans altogether.

The sequel, reportedly, will pick up from where the first film ended: the chickens' life on the island. According to Empire magazine, the film’s official synopsis says, “Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream -- a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland, the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk -- this time, they’re breaking in!”

While the cast has not been announced yet, it is probable that the same actors will reprise their roles in the stop-motion animated sequel.

The 64-year-old American-Australian actor and filmmaker hardly needs an introduction. Gibson is best known for his action hero roles, particularly his performances as Max Rockatansky in the ‘Mad Max’ films, and as Martin Riggs in the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series. Gibson’s other famous roles include ‘Braveheart’, ‘Ransom’, ‘Payback’, ‘What Women Want’, ‘The Patriot’, and ‘We Were Soldiers’.

‘Chicken Run’ was produced by the British studio Aardman Animations in partnership with DreamWorks Animation and Pathé. The sequel, ‘Chicken Run 2’ will be produced once again by Aardman Animations, this time in partnership with Netflix.

The film, per Empire magazine, will be directed by Sam Fell. The script will be written by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’Farrell, Rachel Tunnard, and Nick Park.

Aardman co-founder Peter Lord, who co-directed and co-wrote the original film with Park, said, “Fans around the world have waited patiently for a sequel idea worthy of 'Chicken Run' so we’re delighted to announce, on the 20th anniversary, that we’ve found the perfect story. Netflix feels like the ideal creative partner for this project too: they celebrate the film-maker, which means we can make the film we want to make -- the one we really care about -- and share it with a global audience.”
