Poor Mack just cannot catch a break!

In the Season 9 premiere of NBC's 'Chicago Fire', we were introduced to Gianna "Mack" Mackey (Adriyan Rae), who is the new paramedic with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) after Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) left at the end of the previous season because she wanted to go back to medical school. Mack, who has known Firehouse 51 firefighter Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) since she was a child, is new to the job, but that does not mean 'Chicago Fire' will ease her into it.

Her very first case involved a man who overdosed and as Brett and Mack attended to him, the man's brother pointed a gun at them, threatening their lives if they don't save the overdosed man. The tension the encounter caused to Mack is clearly visible and Cruz -- who seems like he has a brotherly attachment to her -- is concerned that her first call may have been too much for her first day on the job. However, things were only set to get worse from there.

The man who threatened them is on the run and when the two paramedics attend their next call, he chases the ambulance and fires a gun at them, driving them off a bridge. The ambulance falls over and overturns, with Brett and Mack still inside. This is how the season premiere ended -- the show gave us the cliffhanger that it couldn't give when the previous season ended. With both paramedics in danger, it is a race against time as we head into the next episode. The synopsis for this week's episode reads, "Brett and Mackey find their lives in peril. Casey and Brett tread in unfamiliar territory. Severide chases a memory while Kidd adeptly solves a firehouse problem. Ritter puts himself in harm's way during a harrowing call."

The promo for this episode is brief, but we see Captain Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) literally leap into action to save the paramedics, though we know it is because he is really concerned about Brett. Will Casey now finally acknowledge his feelings for Brett? Will it be too late? Either way, the whole "Brettsey" angst may finally come to a resolution in this week's episode -- let us hope it is a good resolution. We are certainly not ready to lose another member of Firehouse 51 again.

The episode will also give us some quality Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) screentime. Last week, Kidd succeeded in relaunching her Girls on Fire program and was asked by Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) to take the lieutenant's exam, so we are excited to see what challenges await her in this week's episode. The part about Severide is very brief, so we are not certain whether he will be chasing a personal or a job-related memory.

Now, Daniel Kyri, who plays Darren Ritter was made a series regular for this season and with Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende) and Mack (if she is to be made permanent) forms the next generation of Firehouse 51's tenants. The more we see of Ritter, the more we like him, so our hopes remain high for this week's episode.

'Chicago Fire' airs on NBC on Wednesday nights at 9/8c. Watch the promo for this week's episode here.
