Chad Smith responds to Steve Gleason's ALS Pepper Challenge, calls out to Will Ferrell and Mike McCready
"The ironic thing is I don’t like Chili Peppers, I’m not a fan of a hot pepper,” said Smith in a video showing him respond to ex-footballer Steve Gleason's ALS Pepper Challenge before calling out friends Mike McCready and Will Ferrell.
On Wednesday (7 March), Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer and Will Ferrell look-alike Chad Smith responded to an interesting challenge from Steve Gleason in a new video.
The response was to an 'ALS Pepper Challenge', which like it's viral cousin - the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge - asks you to donate to ALS research, but instead of dumping freezing cold water on your head, requires you to eat a hot pepper. So who better to take part than an actual Red Hot Chili Pepper, right? Chad received the request from ex-football player Steve Gleason, who suffers from ALS — a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease — himself, reports Alternative Nation.
“This is Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, this is for you Steve. The ironic thing is I don’t like Chili Peppers, I’m not a fan of a hot pepper,” said Smith in a video he shared on Twitter, before the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer literally bit into a red hot chili pepper and spluttered and choked with disgust!

Steve Gleason I (reluctantly) accept your #ALSPepperChallenge @ALSTDI has raised over $500K thru the challenge. I challenge you @MikeMcCreadyPJ & Will Ferrell @funnyordie to do the same! @TeamGleason pic.twitter.com/6BwIQGdmRt— Chad Smith (@RHCPchad) March 5, 2018
Ever the trouper, though, Smith choked down the pepper while at a grocery store and went on to challenge his doppelganger Will Ferrell, as well as Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, to do the same."I’m calling out my buddies Will Ferrell and Mike McCready to do the same," said Smith.
While we haven't heard from Will Ferrell yet, McCready has now responded to Smith saying, “OK, @RHCPchad and Steve, you do realize I have Crohn’s disease and this might cause something bad. However, I support @TeamGleason and recognize the relative differences in ailments. Stay tuned…”

Smith, McCready and Ferrell are good friends and have been hanging out quite a bit lately. Last month, the trio combined forces with Brandi Carlile to cover Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” at One Classy Night In Seattle, when they were suddenly joined by '"local, homegrown kid" Eddie Vedder. The ALS Pepper Challenge was started by sportswriter Tom Haberstroh, who launched the campaign after his mother was diagnosed with ALS. So far, celebrities including Sharon Osbourne, Kelly Clarkson, Charles Barkley and Jimmy Kimmel have participated.
