A senior professor from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York has been accused of sexual misconduct by a female graduate student. The college has been notorious for a series of sexual misconduct allegations and scandals in the recent past. In fact, in 2019, former students Claudia Cojocaru and Naomi Haber alleged in a federal suit that the college and four professors created “a cesspool of sexism, misogyny, sexual harassment and illegal drug use.”

A lawsuit has been allowed by a judge, in which grad student Judith Sandrine Dikambi, now 48, alleged that Associate Professor Carlton Jama Adams, 68, subjected her to groping, unwanted oral sexual contact, harassment, and xenophobic, vulgar, sexist remarks. She was pursuing a Master's Degree at John Jay College while also assisting international students. According to the court documents, Prof Adams misbehaved and harassed Dikambi, often on sexual lines, between 2006 and 2014. She had originally filed the lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court in 2019.

Carlton Jama Adams is a renowned professor as well as the former chair of African American Studies at John Jay College. According to the lawsuit against him, "throughout her professional relationship with Dr Adams from 2006 through 2014, Ms Dikambi endured additional incessant unwanted sexual advances by him."

In 2014, she sought Adams' help with her thesis, when he reportedly subjected her to "unwanted oral sexual contact". Once, he allegedly asked her, "How much will it take for me to sleep with you?” and on another occasion, he groped her "breasts and buttocks." He even pulled her hair once saying, "You are acting like this because you are African.” The complaint was even substantiated by an internal investigation in the department. However, some of the other complaints were not substantiated by the probe.

When Dikambi complained about discrimination in Adams' department, she was transferred to another department but given a demotion, according to her legal papers. In September 2021, Federal Judge Ronnie Abrams allowed the suit to proceed after ruling that Dikambi, "plausibly alleged a hostile work environment against CUNY."

Prior to Dikambi's lawsuit, Naomi Haber contended that in 2015, Adams sat next to her in his office and “placed his hands on her legs and began caressing her upper thighs."

Meanwhile, Adams has declined to comment on Dikambi's lawsuit or Haber's prior allegations. A spokesperson from John Jay College said, "John Jay is committed to fostering an environment where every member of the John Jay community is able to learn and work free from any type of harassment or discrimination. There is absolutely no place for sexual harassment or misconduct at John Jay."
