She has saved the world from the Kree in the 1990s, but Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will remain firmly in the present in the sequel to 2019's 'Captain Marvel'. The script will be written by Megan McDonnell, who has been on the writing staff for 'WandaVision', and is in final negotiations for the deal.

According to THR, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, co-writers and directors of the first film, will not return for the sequel. Marvel is already on the lookout for a new female director and hopes to have the film ready for release by 2022. Details on the project are scarce, but it has been confirmed that the movie will be set in the present day, instead of the 1990s.

'Captain Marvel' was Marvel's first female-led superhero movie, and was released just in time for her to be able to make an appearance on 'Avengers: Endgame' with a solo movie under her belt.

Starring Brie Larson as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, with Samuel L Jackson and Clark Gregg reprising their roles as Nick Fury and Agent Coulson respectively, the movie was set in the 1990s and established that Captain Marvel inspired the 'Avengers' name. Carol Danvers was a pilot from Earth who was captured and experimented on by the Kree, who used her as a soldier in the Kree-Skrull war.

Up until now, there has been no mention of a 'Captain Marvel' sequel, with Phase 4 of the MCU more focused on new Disney+ television shows rather than films in the wake of 'Avengers: Endgame'. Though there are several movies in the works, most of them are about expanding the Marvel Universe with new characters instead of continuing the stories of the old. There are exceptions — Marvel's second female-led superhero film 'Black Widow' is set to release in 2020.

Marvel is taking a gamble on a relative unknown with the script as 'WandaVision' features Megan McDonnel's first major writing credit. The show has its own 'Captain Marvel' ties, featuring a grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, who was seen as a child in the 'Captain Marvel' movie. In the comics, Monica Rambeau is a superhero in her own right and is one of the people who takes up the Captain Marvel name before Carol Danvers.
