LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A California couple had to euthanize their four-pound Yorkshire Terrier after a FedEx driver threw a large package that landed on the dog and caused severe injuries.

Mitchell Galin and Keiko Napier, of the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, told KCBS-TV that their beloved dog, Cooper, was sunbathing in the backyard of their home when the delivery driver casually tossed the package over their fence.

The package, unfortunately, landed on Cooper crushing the dog and when Galin rushed to lift it off, he found the small dog lying in a puddle of blood. The pup was taken to the family's veterinarian, who revealed that she had suffered serious injuries to her lungs and liver.

Not wanting her to live with the pain, the couple decided the best option would be to euthanize her. "It was painful to watch your dog in pain," Galin said. After the incident was reported, FedEx issued an apology and promised to investigate.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the pet involved in this incident," they said. "We take this matter very seriously and are working directly with those involved to determine the circumstances behind this event. Based on the outcome of our investigation, we will take the appropriate action."

However, Galin and Napier were not happy with the apology and demanded that the company enforce organization-wide changes to ensure such a tragedy never occurs again.

"To me, that's not satisfactory," Napier said. "I feel they need to say they're going to institute a corporate-wide mandate that drivers cannot throw packages. That's what I want to hear. I don't want to hear we’ll look into it."

It wasn't just about Cooper either for the couple, who said the driver's reckless actions could have harmed their family as well.

"Our grandchild plays out here," Napier said. "My mother is out here gardening. I'm here gardening. And the package was so heavy, should it have struck one of us, it would've caused damage — very very severe damage."
