COMPTON, LOS ANGELES: A man, in a video posted on social media, was seen mocking the attack on two Los Angeles police officers in Compton on Saturday night, September 12. The video taken by the person, who has not been identified, showed him capturing the enormous police response as a convoy of patrol cars rushed towards the scene after the sheriff's deputies were ambushed and shot.

The two officers, a 31-year-old female and a 24-year-old male, were shot at close range in Compton, Los Angeles after the suspect, believed to be a Black man, walked up to their car and opened fire. The officers are believed to be in a critical condition as a hunt has been launched for the suspect.

The man, in the recently emerged video, can be seen narrating to the camera, saying: "Compton. N***** just aired the police out. That's crazy. Damn. It goes down in Compton." The man then smiles into the camera and says: "It's going up. Somebody bust on their a**. Somebody bust on the police. Two sheriffs shot in the face. Two sheriffs shot in the face - they tripping. Somebody just ran up on the corner and bust on their a**, right through the window." He concluded the video grinning, saying: "It's a wrap."

The video drew the ire of some social media users who slammed the bystander and others for not going to the aide of the stricken officers. One Twitter user wrote: "Here’s the reaction of an eyewitness to the ambush of two Deputies shot in the head in #Compton. The victims are in the background. No one is going to help them. Vote like your life depends on it. #BlueLivesMatter." While another said: "Absolutely disgusting. No regards for human life at all. Amazing how these oppressed people all have $1000 smartphones to capture their own detachment from humanity." A third added: "All of this is happening under Trump's presidency. This is terrible. I agree with Mr @RealJamesWoods. Vote like your life depends on it. Vote blue to save America."

President Donald Trump also slammed the suspect in the case on Sunday, saying that he should face a "fast trial death penalty" if the deputies in the incident succumbed to their injuries. Trump, while addressing a rally in Nevada on Sunday night, said: "If you murder a police officer, you should receive the death penalty. I just saw a video of that animal who went up to the car. They were unsuspecting, fine people - very fine people." The president had earlier called the shooter an "animal" who needed to be "hit hard."

The Los Angeles Times, on Sunday, September 13, reported that one of the two officers had managed to radio for assistance after being shot. A video of the incident also shows the passenger door of the patrol car opens and a deputy stumbles out of it as the gunman runs away. According to the video reviewed by the outlet, a trembling voice mutters on the radio: "998 Compton Pax." A dispatcher, after recognizing the code for deputy-involved shooting, asks: "Just happened?" The wounded deputy then says: "Compton Pax, deputies down. Compton Pax 998." The two officers were attacked at the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Oak Street in Compton.
