‘Briarpatch’ Episode 6: Was Felicity Jake’s bait to lure Allegra into San Bonifacio?

Spoilers ahead for episode 6 of 'Briarpatch'

With each passing episode, the list of suspicious people on the show has only increased as Allegra Dill's (Rosario Dawson) quest for truth concerning the killing of her sister Felicity Dill (Michele Weaver) continues.

While the previous episodes painted Jake Spivey (Jay R Ferguson) as one among the privileged names of Texas city, who we believed withheld a lot of power, the latest episode ‘The Most Sinful MF---er Alive’, explores the unseen side to his persona.

The latest episode ran red, as Jake’s mansion comes under attack by Clyde Brattle’s (Alan Cumming) armed men. It was seemingly bizarre how the former was looking forward to Brattle’s attack, despite having not much on him to sustain the impact, let alone fight back.

We were as surprised for Allegra to learn that Jake was, in fact, broke and feeding on cheap cheese balls, while being uppity to the outside world. That explains why he had immigrants for guards, who couldn’t shoot for nuts. But, their presence did a great deal in keeping other predators away from the assumed rich brat of San Bonifacio.

Although the endless lies and a range of elaborate deceptions were alone enough to push Allegra away from Jake, she goes about creeping into his mansion amid the attack to ask “Did you kill Felicity?” At this, it starts to feel like there’s no limit to the series’ absurdity.

However, Jake’s convincing behavior and words essentially describing feelings for Allegra to a certain extent explain her affiliation with her childhood friend.

More than once, the latest episode emphasizes the lustful relationship Jake and Allegra share. Not only does he establish that Allegra is the only person who is constantly on his mind (Besides Brattle, of course), but also takes a shot in the gut to save her saying he wouldn’t let anything hurt her.

Does he mean only he can hurt? Well, knowing how Allegra took the blame for him when the duo was caught blackmailing a congressman for possession of powerful weapons, we couldn’t expect anything good to come of Jake. At least, nothing has so far.

It is possible that Jake killed Felicity when she tried exposing his involvement in human trafficking along with Lalo (David Zaldivar) and Eve Raytek (Kim Dickens)? Or, did Colder, who was seen apologizing to Brattle for not finishing Jake, kill Felicity to cover his own act?

‘Briarpatch’ airs on Mondays on USA Network.
