Get ready for five power-packed performances in Alankrita Shrivastava's newest 'Bombay Begums' — stories 'of women, by women, and for women'. The Netflix series explores the dreams and desires of five women from different strata of society as they fight for survival in the big city.

The trailer, which dropped on Monday, promises excitement with a cast starring Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur and Aadhya Anand. "Some women are born to rules. We call them queens," the trailer begins to say, "Some women secretly aspire to be Queen," it adds. Here's what's to know about the Hindi social-issue drama.

Release Date

'Bombay Begums' is set to premieres on Netflix on Women's Day, March 8, 2021.

Plot

The show revolves around Pooja Bhatt’s character Rani, and how her life gets intertwined with the other four women – Lily (Amruta Subhash), Fatima (Shahana Goswami), Shai (Aadhya Anand) and Ayesha (Plabita Borthakur).

The spotlight is on five women across generations "as they wrestle with desire, ethics, personal crises, and vulnerabilities to own their ambition, in contemporary urban India", according to the Netflix show's YouTube bio. While glass ceilings are shattered and hearts are broken, difficult choices have to be made.

The trailer depicts how the five women shatter societal norms and patriarchy, as they set out to find their own truths and win in their careers, love life and relationships, while also finding in each other an unexpected understanding and the sliver of a bond. 

Cast

Pooja Bhatt 

Pooja Bhatt plays the role of step-mother Rani. She is the daughter of Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt and Loraine Bright. She made a debut with her father's production 'Daddy' when she was just 17 years old, acting alongside Anupam Kher, for which she won a Filmfare award. The actor has two National Film Awards.

Aadhya Anand

Aadhya Anand plays Rani's step-daughter Shai. The series will be a debut for the actress, model and dancer, who has earlier starred in a 2016 Singaporean film called 'Utter 2016: One Hour To Daylight'.

Shahana Goswami

Shahana Goswami plays Fatima, a married woman struggling to find a balance between her work and career. The actor has starred as Meenakshi Mehra in Mira Nair's 'A Suitable Boy', 'Thinkistan' (2019), 'Midnight's Children' (2012), 'Ra.One' (2011) and 'Rock On!!' (2008).

Amruta Subhash 

Amruta Subhash plays the role of Lily, a bar dancer. She starred in 'Choked' (2020), 'Ghost Stories' (2020), as Kusum Devi Yadav in 'Sacred Games' (2019) and as Razia Ahmed in 'Gully Boy' (2019).

Plabita Borthakur

Plabita Borthakur plays the role of Ayesha, a worker at Rani’s office. The actress is known for her work in 'PK' (2014), 'Breathe: Into the Shadows' (2020), 'What's Your Status' (2018) and 'Lipstick Under My Burkha' (2016).

'Bombay Begums' also stars Vivek Gomber, Danish Husain, Rahul Bose, Imaad Shah and Nauheed Cyrusi.

Creators

The show is written and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava. She co-wrote and directed episodes of Amazon's critically acclaimed series 'Made in Heaven'. She has previously assisted noted Indian director Prakash Jha on films like 'Gangajal', 'Apaharan', and 'Rajneeti' among others. She worked on the screenplay for 'Dolly Kitty and Those Twinkling Stars' (2019) and 'Lipstick Under my Burkha' (2016).
