Meghan Markle is the star even with Kate Middleton around, body language expert says
In a first, Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton, and Princes William and Harry made a joint appearance. At the end of their joint appearance at the Royal Foundation Forum, it was clear who emerged as the leader of the group.
Meghan Markle and her soon-to-be sister-in-law Kate Middleton sat next to each other at the Royal Foundation Forum on February 28. It was the first time that two of the most beautiful women in the UK were present at the same event, and it was clear who stole people's hearts. The American actress, who has been an advocate of women's rights, showed passion and leadership at the recently held royal function. There's a reason why Prince Harry's fiancée was more popular than Kate: her body language communicated confidence.
According to body language expert Judi James, Meghan used gestures that displayed how energetic she is. Judi added that Harry, who was initially hesitant, mirrored his fiancée's expressions and gestures, which made them both seem more spontaneous. She added, "Harry and Meghan are far more energetic and spontaneous-looking, speaking with passion and both using matching emphatic hand gestures to get their points and views across."
In pictures that emerged from the event, Meghan is seen sitting in an upright posture, with one arm on the chair. In Judi's words, this signalled her impatience and intention to "get things done." The actress, who is used to addressing a large crowd, also seemed more casual and confident — something that Kate lacked.
The Duchess of Cambridge sat demurely and fidgeted with her fingers while Meghan and her husband, Prince William spoke. Judi said the Duchess of Cambridge had a calm and more measured body language at the Royal Foundation Forum.
"She and William used very similar hand gestures to make their points; they hold their hands apart in an evaluation and measuring gesture that suggests careful, measured thinking behind their points," the body language expert added, according to The Sun.
However, Kate's body language also fell in line with the silent signals the royal family sends at official visits. Kate's calm and measured words suggested that the royals' voice will get heard and that there's no need to show active confidence. In any case, it seems as if Meghan deeply respects Kate because the future Duchess had a "serious listening face" when the mother-of-two spoke.
While the two women appeared friendly and even shared a laugh at Harry's joke, their demeanour signalled how very different Kate and Meghan are. They seem to have varied communication styles and James suggested that the soon-to-be sisters-in-law could even have some friendly clashes as they're both strong women.
To be sure, Kate and Meghan have carved two very different identities for themselves. Kate's measured approach at various official functions commands respect not just from Meghan but from the rest of the country as well. That's one of the reasons why she's steered clear of controversies in her seven years as a member of the royal family.
Although Meghan's dynamism stands out in comparison to Kate and her husband, Judi said, "Beneath all this though was a look of strong family ties that do seem to be embracing Meghan."
