'#blackAF': Release date, plot, cast, trailer, all you need to know about mockumentary from 'Black-ish' creator
Did you ever watch Kenya Barris' comedy series 'Black-ish' and think to yourself that you couldn't get enough of it? Netflix is bringing, in what will be the first series of his overall deal, Barris' '#blackAF' this April.
Inspired by his real-life marriage and unorthodox approach to parenting, relationships, race and culture, the mockumentary from Barris is a lot like a scripted family vlog with Rashida Jones playing the mother hen.
Release date
'#blackAF' is set to premiere on Netflix on April 17, 2020.
Plot
According to the official synopsis of the series, "From Kenya Barris, the Emmy® nominated creator of black-ish, comes #blackAF. Loosely inspired by Barris' irreverent, highly flawed, unbelievably honest approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture, #blackAF flips the script on what we’ve come to expect a family comedy series to be."
"Pulling back the curtain, '#blackAF' uncovers the messy, unfiltered and often hilarious world of what it means to be a 'new money' black family trying to get it right in a modern world where 'right' is no longer a fixed concept."
Cast
Kenya Barris as himself
Barris plays a fictionalized version of himself. This is perhaps his first acting gig. The writer and producer is best known for his award-winning series 'Black-ish', and the subsequent two spin-offs 'Grown-ish' and 'Mixed-Ish'.
Rashida Jones as Joya
Jones plays the role of Joya, Barris' on-screen wife. The actress is best known for her role of Ann Perkins on 'Parks and Recreation' and the eponymous role in 'Angie Tribeca'.
Barris and Joya’s children are played by Genneya Walton ('Xtant'), Iman Benson ('Suits'), Scarlet Spencer ('Bright'), Justin Claiborne ('Reverie'), Ravi Cabot-Conyers ('The Resident') and Richard Gardenhire Jr.
Creators
'#blackAF' is executive produced by Barris, who will also be the showrunner with Jones and Hale Rothstein.
Trailer
You can watch the hilarious trailer here:
From the creator of "Black-ish" comes a brand new comedy that, from the looks of the trailer, is shot like a reality TV series. The mockumentary format, we must admit, is quite a riot. The trailer begins with guest appearances from Issa Rae, Lena Waithe, Ava DuVernay, Will Packer, Tim Story, and Tyler Perry.
The trailer also shows them dealing with some everyday problems such as buying a new car or whether their kids' party bags should have Samsung phones and Fendi key chains.
Where to watch
'#blackAF' will be available to stream on Netflix on April 17, 2020.
