'Big Little Lies' spoilers: Tension between Madeline and Mary? Meryl Streep's arrival in season 2 explained
Now with Perry dead - killed rather in an act of self-defense - it is but obvious that Mary's intentions for visiting Monetery are not the most harmonious ones.
Drama will soar and relationships will get even more complicated in Monterey as a new cast member joins 'Big Little Lies' in season 2. The Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz-starring HBO series has already traced its way to the critics' radar, thanks to the tackling of tough subject matter like abuse and a murder. And it's going to get even more intriguing in the second season when Celeste's (Kidman) mother-in-law comes down for a visit.
Starring Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep as Mary Louise Wright, mother of Celeste's late husband Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard), the plot is headed straight for a battle, surprisingly involving Mary and fellow Monterey resident Madeline (Witherspoon).
Oh Matt! No need to pray. I got her ! 🍦🎯 https://t.co/nMitvPXETc— Reese Witherspoon (@RWitherspoon) August 1, 2018
“It is true that I threw an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep. This might inform you about our relationship in the show,” Witherspoon said during a recent appearance on 'The Tonight Show'. “I really chucked it at her, y’all — and I nailed it.”
This actually makes sense considering the friendship between Madeline and Celeste. Now with Perry dead - killed rather in an act of self-defense - it is but obvious that Mary's intentions for visiting Monetery are not the most harmonious ones. If anything, things are likely to get heated up at the Wright household, especially with the responsibility of the twins falling completely on Celeste.
But if our experience with the show is to be considered, there's always a twist in store. Having two prominent characters like that of Mary and Celeste at loggerheads is of no use - so chances are that the two ladies would make peace under the most extraordinary circumstances. Perhaps, Mary is all aware of her son's flaws and her arrival in the city is more out of concern than anger. Regardless of their relationship, one thing is certain that Streep will be starring prominently in the upcoming season of 'Big Little Lies'.
As Witherspoon teases, "We just finished shooting the second season. Meryl Streep is in it. She’s in every episode! She wanted to be in every episode and I told her she didn’t have to be, but she was having fun."
She added: "I’m not allowed to tell anyone anything about the season. I’m always looking for a different perspective or something I haven’t seen before and she got humor in a very serious story.”
The premiere date for 'Big Little Lies' is yet to be disclosed by HBO.
