Iowa Caucuses 2020: Bernie Sanders wins the Iowa Democratic caucus in Scotland
Bernie Sanders’ supporters were celebrating as the Vermont senator won the Iowa Caucuses some thousand of miles away from Iowa. Yes, the 78-year-old veteran lawmaker bagged the maximum support in a small, satellite caucus for Iowans living abroad in Glasgow, Scotland, Associated Press reported.
This is the first time that Iowa Democrats have held caucuses outside the Hawkeye State. The idea is to make the occasions more inclusive for Iowans living outside the territory of Iowa or abroad. AP reported that Sanders received support from nine of the 19 caucusgoers who attended the event. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who had a conflict with Sanders over his alleged sexist remark, finished with six supporters while former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg bagged three. Another top candidate Joe Biden received no votes.
Though the size of the electorate was far too insignificant for making any decisive impact on the outcome in Iowa, yet Sanders’ campaign would be delighted to have bagged the win.
Sanders lost to Hillary by a whisker in 2016 Iowa Caucuses
Sanders had come very close to winning Iowa in 2016 but lost to Hillary Clinton, the eventual nominee, by a whisker. Hillary bagged 49.84 percent of the votes while Sanders got 49.59 percent.
Sanders’ campaign claimed to have raised $3 million through online fundraising a day after the socialist candidate almost beat Hillary. He soon had a sweet revenge in New Hampshire where he got over 60 percent of the votes as against Hillary’s 38. As per the entrance polls, as cited by CNN, a third of the Democratic caucusgoers in Iowa are aged over 65, which is more than 28 percent registered in 2016 and 22 percent in 2008.
Around one in five caucusgoers are aged between 17 and 29 and half of them are supporting Sanders which makes him the dearest candidate among the youth.
