Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has decided against dropping out from the race for bagging the party’s nomination for the November 3 election but has he surrendered to the fact that it is now a futile endeavor for him? The Vermont senator, who started off very well in the primaries, faced a series of losses since the South Carolina Primary which has seen his rival Joe Biden surging ahead. Sanders’ defeat in the Michigan Primary on March 10 was particularly disappointing since he was looking to make a comeback after a disappointing Super Tuesday on March 3.

Sanders spoke to Jimmy Fallon in an interview on The Tonight Show on Wednesday, March 11, in which he said that Biden was in a place to beat President Donald Trump in this year’s election. The 78-year-old said the people of US were ready to see the end of the Trump presidency and a win is not out of the former vice president’s reach.

When asked by Fallon whether Biden could humble the incumbent, Sanders said: “I do.”

“And I think, you know, when you have a president who is a pathological liar. When you have a president who truly– apparently has never read the Constitution of the United States, who thinks he is above the law, who is a racist and a sexist and all of that stuff, I think even Republicans and moderates are gonna say you know what, we can't have four more years of this guys,” Sanders added amid the audience’s applause.

Then Sanders uttered the interesting words.

“So do I think Joe can beat him? I do,” he said, adding: “You know, between you and me. Don't tell anybody.” The words were accompanied with a smile.

Sanders though then went on to add that his campaign is stronger to accomplish that job. A day after the debacle on Mini Tuesday, Sanders said in Burlington, Vermont, that his campaign was winning the ideological battle but losing the one on electability. Sanders was trailing Biden by 153 delegates at the end of the Mini Tuesday. A candidate has to get the backing of 1,991 delegates to clinch the nomination.

Polls show Biden and Sanders ahead of Trump

Recent pollings show that both Biden and Sanders are capable of beating Trump in the general election. An average of recent national polls compiled by Real Clear Politics shows that Biden is ahead of Trump by about 6.3 points while those done by CNN and Quinnipiac showed him leading the president by 10 and 11 points, respectively. One poll conducted by Emerson last month, however, showed Biden was trailing Trump by four points.

Sanders, on the other hand, was also leading Trump by five points (Real Clear Politics) and seven points (both CNN and Quinnipiac). The Emerson poll also showed Sanders winning over Trump by two points.
