It is easy to argue that no family is happy and harmonious all the time, but perhaps it is time Pomrenke Sr and Jr bury the hatchet, hug and maybe shed happy tears even

Spoilers for 'Bering Sea Gold' Season 9 Episode 9 'Gold is Thicker than Blood'

After all the storm and the battering that Ken Kerr and his Myrtle Irene took in the last couple of episodes, the latest episode of 'Bering Sea Gold' focuses on family and provides a look at the bond between the skippers and their relationships with family members. Vernon Adkison has every reason to feel proud of his daughter, Elaine, and Emily Riedel is mending her relationship with dad Steve Riedel after he came back to work on the Eroica and shows tremendous improvement.

The Pomrenkes need to have a family discussion. Period. Over the course of the seasons, most viewers are aware of Shawn's strained relationship with his father Steve and the son takes the first step to get the house in order. Except, it's back to the profanity and the screaming as both don't see eye-to-eye. While it is easy to argue that no family is happy and harmonious all the time, perhaps its time Pomrenke Sr and Jr bury the hatchet, hug and maybe shed happy tears even.

With the season drawing to a close, the father-son duo with the combined knowledge and skill could slalom through obstacles and be undisputed in Nome, but that looks nowhere close to happening as the duo fail to come to terms even as the episode closes. Moving on to Emily, the skipper has big plans. In her bid to expand her mining empire by acquiring a second dredge, she brings back Steve into the fold. By showing him the ropes and making him a seasoned skipper, she plans on taking over the operations for the second dredge.

Vernon was a happy man. After the constant diving leaves his diver exhausted and down with a headache, daughter Elaine suits up and goes underwater. For someone who had never dived much, she does a tremendous job in raking some gold that gets the Wild Ranger up and running and gets them back in the gold game. By the end of the episode, Kerr is shown to have a slender lead with Shawn in hot pursuit. With 55 ounces after their latest outing, Emily is inches away from acquiring a new dredge.

With the summer drawing to a close, 'Bering Sea Gold' uses 'Gold is Thicker than Blood' as a much-needed filler episode. The fact that it focused on family lends more depth to the reality series and proves it is more than just about mining and glistening gold.

'Bering Sea Gold' Season 9 airs on Fridays at 8 pm ET on Discovery.
