Spoilers for 'Bering Sea Gold' Season 9 Episode 4

This one's all about the divers. While Shawn Pomrenke and Ken Kerr have the mega dredges to do the digging, the remaining skippers Emily Riedel of the Eroica, Kris Kelly of the Reaper and Vernon Adkison of the Wild Ranger have roped in divers to get their feet on the seabed and dig out some gold. In focus are two divers, Bree Savage and Brian Donham— the new hires by Kelly and Adkison. Their contrasting finishes make the episode an interesting watch.

Bree didn't dive the first time as she forgot her diving boots. This may have caused Kelly's brother, Andy, and father, Brad to flinch and express their anger quite openly, but Kelly was adamant about giving her a second chance. Except, it fizzles out big time when Bree panics after going down. Her screams for help alarms the crew on the reaper and she reveals that she was hit by something causing her face mask to come off. Needless to say, the disappointment was writ large on Kelly's face.

Meanwhile, Adkison has invested in a diver, Brian Donham. They find a spot that could potentially see them rake in the moolah and the first blow to the operation comes in the form of a pulley that helps lower the diver. Brian attempts to free dive and in his quest to find gold, finds the pulley instead, impressing Adkison. With the repairs made, Brian is now connected to the boat as he makes his dive and is optimistic he found some gold at the bottom.

In the end, it's good news for Brian as he's won the faith of his employers. Bree, on the other hand, was let go after the near-catastrophe that almost cost her, her life and Kelly now needs a diver stat. Andy will be his go-to man, but it looks like he may need another diver.

As far as the tussle for the "Mr.Gold" title goes, Shawn makes giant strides working early before the tide set in. He manages to make 127.5 ounces and is catching up to his rival, Ken Kerr. The Myrtle Irene owner has some stress of his own though. After all the heavy lifting, the crane runs into a bushing problem effectively halting his mining operation. Here's a look at the standings by the end of the episode:

Gold Count (Discovery)

With this, 'Bering Sea Gold' puts in another fast-paced episode, giving ample screentime to each of the captains. The focus on Adkison and Kelly's divers was probably to give an idea to the viewers about how the skippers' summer would go from here. Shawn fans will still be happy.

'Bering Sea Gold' Season 9 airs Fridays 8 pm ET on Discovery.
