Spoilers for 'Barkskins'

Last week, 'Barkskins' bid farewell on a terrifying note as the Iroquois made their way to Wobik. One by one, the men brought down their family members who were hanged on the river by Constable Bouchard in a bid to send a message to the tribe. As the dead were dismounted, the Iroquois promised revenge.

They took Father Gabriel and later René Sel (Christian Cooke) hostage. And now it remains to be seen what happens to them at the hands of the now vindictive Iroquois. Since Annie Proulx's novel, which is the basis of the National Geographic series, follows René's generations through her book that spans 300 years, it could be assumed that nothing will happen to him. But what about the priest? Do the Iroquois care about a man of a God that is worshipped by the West, the same West that is encroaching on their lands, harming their families?

All of Wobik right now is under a lot of stress. While it looks like a war is imminent, men can't help getting embroiled in petty issues. For instance, Claude Trepagny and what will now be an unavoidable domestic dispute involving his new wife Melissande (Tallulah Haddon) and Mari (Kaniehtiio Horn). Melissande has been obsessed with land, legacy and money and it hardly seems likely that she will go on without a fight. Mari, on the other hand, has been preparing for Trepagny to get himself a young wife for a while now. But will she be able to face her when she is right in front of her?

Towards the end of the previous episode, the English girl that Hamish Goames (Aneurin Barnard) and Yvon (Zahn McClarnon) rescued after the massacre stabs the man who forced himself on Mathilde (Marcia Gay Harden) earlier in the episode. So ruthless and agile, who really is this girl that could easily take on a huge man without qualms?

As men in New France begin preparing for the battle of survival, what will happen next? The deadly game of land and legacy has only just begin and only time will tell who will hold his or her ground through it all.

'Barkskins' airs on National Geographic on Mondays at 9/ 8c.
