‘Balthazar’ Episode 4: Will Rafael’s confrontation with his past during investigation help him find Lise’s Killer?

Forensic expert Rafael Balthazar is one of the smartest and most captivating characters we’ve come across on television but as the series progresses, we are exposed to the lesser-known side of his, which is deep in misery and distress.

Episode 4 of ‘Balthazar’ seems to be solely dedicated to the protagonist, who is doing everything in his power to hunt down the man who killed the love of his life. In the latest episode, we see Rafael confront his own past during one of his latest investigations.

The case presented in episode 4 deals with the murder of a 28-year-old woman named Jasmine Lefevre, who was found dead in a movie theatre. She was recently engaged to her boyfriend Lucas Girand, who towards the end of the episode, is revealed to be her half-brother.

Lucas’ father is a business tycoon, who had an affair with a maid who worked at his hotel nearly 26 years ago. Jasmine was born out of his infidelity and she knew it all along. However, Lucas was unaware of the fact that Jasmine was his half-sister. Lucas’ parents, to get rid of Jasmine, resort to killing her. Lucas, who was also present at the scene of crime, is accidentally stabbed by his mother but ends up surviving when Rafael comes to his rescue.

While Rafael and Bach make for a great pair and emerge successful in solving yet another case, they are unable to define their relationship. At the beginning of the episode when Rafael introduces Bach to one of his flings, she seems to be rather bothered by his promiscuity. But that doesn’t stop her from asking him about the lady whom he simply calls his acquaintance.

Until now, watching the two develop a strange chemistry, we were rooting for Rafael and Bach's romantic relationship, but episode 4 makes us take a step back. Regardless of the Casanova image Rafael carries, he is still haunted by the dark memories of his past, primarily concerning the demise of Lise.

Towards the end of the episode when he converses with Lise’s spirit, which is nothing but a projection of his own thoughts, Rafael establishes that he will never be at peace with himself, until he finds Lise’s killer.

Unlike the previous episodes that glorified Rafael for his achievements, the latest installment brings forth a few aspects which make us truly empathize with him.
