Fans will be getting a chance to know more about the polarizing Italian genius Roberto Baggio thanks to the upcoming Netflix biopic ‘Baggio: The Divine Ponytail’.

The biographical film tells the story of Baggio, one of the greatest footballers to play the game. The project will explore his humble beginnings in Caldogno and how he went on to represent his national team in the World Cup.Baggio was acquired by the Vicenza youth team at the age of 13. After scoring 110 goals in 120 matches, Baggio began his professional career with the Vicenza senior side in 1983, at age 15. Since then, Baggio went on to play for clubs like Fiorentina, Juventus, AC Milan, Bologna, Inter Milan, and Brescia. His debut appearance for Italy came in the year 1988 against the Netherlands and scored his first international goal in a game against Uruguay on April 22, 1989. The movie will be filled with enthralling sequences and how he became one of the legendary names in the game of football.

Air time

The upcoming documentary will be premiering exclusively on Netflix on Wednesday, May 26 at 3 am.

How to live stream

According to the Netflix press site, ‘Baggio: The Divine Ponytail’ will be airing on Netflix at 3 am EST. Subscribe to Netflix directly, via a mobile app store (App Store, Google Play). You can the documentary by signing up for the platform’s free trial. Apart from that, viewers can also opt for different subscription plans provided by the streaming giant. A premium plan that allows more people to watch the service on different screens simultaneously, costs $18 per month. Meanwhile, the basic US plan costs $9 per month.

Plot

The official synopsis reads, “The Divine Ponytail retraces the twenty-two-year-long career of Roberto Baggio, focusing on the champions’ story and one of the men behind it. By telling the story of the rise of both the champion and the man behind it, the conflicts with his coaches, the unforeseen events, and an extraordinary ability to react, it paints the portrait of an icon destined to become, over the years, a symbol of Italian football throughout the world.”

Cast

Andrea Arcangeli plays the role of iconic footballer in the movie while Valentina Belle portrays the character of Roberto’s wife Andreina Fabbi Baggio. On the other hand, Thomas Trabacchi will be playing the role of Baggio’s long-time manager and close friend Vittorio Petrone.

Creators

The movie is being directed by Letizia Lamartire who is known for helming several Italian-language projects such as ‘Piccole Italiane’, ‘Saremo giovani e bellissimi’ and ‘Baby’.

Trailer

The trailer sees Arcangeli portraying the character of Baggio who is telling his family that he has been acquired by the football club Fiorentina. However, his dad is not happy with the news. Meanwhile, one of Baggio’s close friends tells him that he is Diego Maradona for his team. The clip also sees how Baggio overcame a career-ending injury and became one of the greatest of all time.
