'Avenue 5' Episode 2 promo introduces techie as possible savior while Captain Ryan Clark continues cluelessly

'Avenue 5' Episode 2 will give new hope to the passengers in the form of a techie on board who has a better idea about fixing the trajectory than Captain Ryan Clark

The promo of the upcoming episode for 'Avenue 5' teases more cluelessness of Captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie) and Matt Spencer, the customer service guy who does no service and is useless in the face of the latest technical mess up onboard. The gravity switch flip has not only killed the only engineer who can help the ship return to its original trajectory, but has also left the ship with no captain. We last saw Ryan Clark confess that he was only the captain because the original captain, Joe the engineer, who also happens to be dead, is not socially equipped to deal with customers.

Now, the fake captain has to figure out the solution to get the people onboard Avenue 5 back to Earth as planned. The new trajectory means the ship will take three years to return to Earth, but resources onboard cannot accommodate people for that long. With the death of the head engineer, the only one who has any idea what is going on is the engineer's assistant, Billie McEvoy (Lenora Crichlow).

However, when she tries to explain what is wrong with the space ship to the passengers, she fails miserably because they do understand all the technical words she is using. It is expected that this time, Ryan will use one of the passengers who is sharp enough to understand the circumstance to explain things to her fellow passenger. This would be none other than Karen Kelly (Rebecca Front) who hates Matt already for his terrible work. With her help, Ryan might just be able to calm the passengers down. From the one picture that was released by HBO of the upcoming episode, it seems that Karen is quite satisfied with her new role.

The promo trailer also introduces us to an alternative option for the space ship in the form of a techie on board. He enters the control room with a tablet in his hand and claims that thankfully it is not going to take them three years to get back. How and why? We are as clueless as Ryan at this point. Does he really have a plan or is he going to take the fake captain for a ride? This is something that we will see in the upcoming episode of the show.

We will also see how the Mission Control Room on Earth headed by Rav Mulcair (Nikki Amuka-Bird) is going to deal with the change of plans. For one, they definitely have no clue about how to get the space ship back on track. In the process of finding that, Rav only ends up bickering with the people in the control room and this is definitely not good for the spacecraft because no one is actively involved in finding a solution other than the crazy techie guy. So we will see more of this next week as well.

'Avenue 5' Episode 2 will air on Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
