'Avengers Endgame': Captain America was initially meant to be Soul Stone, but it would have made no sense
One of the most heart-wrenching moments from 'Avengers: Endgame' was watching Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) sacrificing herself in Vormir so that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) could obtain the Soul Stone. On April 27, directors Anthony and Joe Russo held a Quarantine Watch Party, where they revealed new bits and pieces of information about crucial and maybe not-so-crucial scenes. One tweet explained that Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans) was meant to get the Soul Stone, and not Black Widow, however, this idea faded away.
Fans don't agree on her death and that the character deserved better than to be just 'fridged'. Their argument is that Black Widow had spent five years trying to keep the Avengers together, while Hawkeye had gone rogue and was killing people. Though Black Widow is getting her own standalone film, it's still not enough to soothe the fans.
In their tweet, the directors said, "Early on in development talks we considered making Cap the soul stone... But that idea fell away rather quickly."
Fans replied to this tweet, thanking them for not going through with the plan. "Whoa....not cool lol! Glad you all didnt go through with that," a fan tweeted.
"I would've sobbed uncontrollably," another fan wrote.
"I respect the Russo brothers for knowing when to walk away from ideas that could be very cool, but just didn't work (like Cap being the soul stone or Thanos entering with the severed head of Cap). They aim to make the best movie & that's what they consistently achieve," another fan wrote.
"So killing nat was never the first choice guess it does make even more sense that red skull was there," a fan tweeted.
However, many fans say that they would've have minded seeing Red Skull go up against Captain America again. "Cap seeing Red Skull again would’ve been interesting," wrote a fan.
"I would've love to see cap facing the red skull again. I hope they bring him back in the future," a fan tweeted.
Well, Captain America obtaining the Soul Stone would never have made sense, and boy, fans would have probably rioted at that thought. There were various ideas about Captain America's death, including Thanos walking in with his severed head. Thankfully, the Russo brothers walked away from that idea, as viewers would be more emotionally drained. Killing three lead characters would have been a little too much to take. More than that, Cap needed to be in the final battle, as he had to wield Mjolnir and lead the Avengers for their final showdown with Thanos.
The battle did need him. Plus, who would have gone with Cap to Vormir? So did Natasha deserve to be there, and if only they had found a way. *Looking at you Hawkeye*
