The first season of Netflix’s ‘Another Life’ unveiled the Achaia, an alien race with plans of galactic conquest, as the main series villains. The events of the sci-fi show are set in motion by a strange alien ship that lands on Earth and creates a crystalline communication tower.

Commander Niko Breckinridge (Katee Sackhoff) sets off with her crew aboard the Salvare, an exploratory vessel, on a mission to locate the Artifact’s origins. ‘Another Life’ started with a scene showing the alien Artifact landing on Earth and being witnessed by Selma Blair’s Harper Glass, a world-renowned journalist with a massive following.

Throughout the first season, Harper attempted to find out what she can about the progress of Niko’s mission and the true purpose of the Artifact. While we were initially led to believe that the aliens who sent the Artifact were friendly, the show’s finale exposed them for the villains they are.

The Salvare reached the end of its journey only to find the signal they were following did not come from the Achaian homeworld but from a world they conquered. The first season made it clear that the Achaia already have a clear advantage over the crew of the Salvare.

The alien invaders are far more technologically advanced than humanity and they have no aversion to destroying entire planets to further their agenda. The Achaia managed to bring one of the Salvare’s crew members, Sasha Harrison (Jake Abel), under their control using a spider-like implant.

Though Sasha eventually died, the implant was used to revive a brain-dead crewmember. While the implant was supposedly wiped clear of all Achaian programming, there’s still a chance it may simply be hiding its true purpose and biding its time.

Harper was also revealed to be under the control of the Achaia, convincing Niko’s husband Erik Wallace (Justin Chatwin) and their daughter Jana Breckinridge-Wallace (Lina Renna) to enter the Artifact in order to find a cure for Jana’s leukemia, which was caused by the aliens themselves. The first season left Erik and Jana’s fate ambiguous but we can assume they will be used against Niko in some way.

Even as the Salvare races to make it back to Earth and warn humanity, Harper is busy using her influence to convince the world to embrace the Achaia with open arms. When Niko arrives back home, she’s going to have a hard time fighting the Achaia’s greatest invasion tactic - fake news.

Harper has already announced to the world that the Achaia are friendly and that they are coming to Earth to share their gifts with humanity. Considering the large following that she enjoys, it’s fair to assume that most of humanity will believe what she says without realizing the truth until it's too late.

Niko may be a talented astronaut but we have no idea how she will deal with this particular tactic. Sackhoff has teased that the show’s second season will introduce new crew members so perhaps one of them might have some skills that could help, though we can’t imagine what they might be.

‘Another Life’ is currently available for streaming exclusively on Netflix. There has been no official confirmation yet on whether the show will be renewed for a second season.
