A woman was allegedly gang-raped by three staff members of an Indian hospital while she was being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), reports said.

The victim's husband alleged she was admitted to the ICU of the hospital in Meerut in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where she was given an injection and sedated.

According to the New Indian Express, the woman, once sedated, was then gang-raped by the three men, her husband told police officials.

The alleged victim was reportedly experiencing breathing problems and was being treated in the ICU at the medical facility on Sunday.

As per the police, CCTV cameras of the ICU were switched off at the time of the alleged attack. Senior police officer, Harimohan Singh told ANI: "The woman was admitted to the hospital with a breathing problem. She has alleged that she was gang-raped by hospital staff on Sunday."

The police also revealed that four men along with a woman have been arrested and are being questioned by officers in relation to the case.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law and further investigations are on.

This is definitely not a stand-alone rape attack in North India, since last week reports came in about a 12-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by her male family members before being strangled and beheaded in Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier this month, students from India's southern state of Tamil Nadu took to the streets in protest after a number of videos showing sexual assaults on college girls were posted online.

Women's rights campaigners made demands for the police to investigate the assaults and provide protection for the victims.

As per the Daily Mail, a lot of the female victims in the case had since been identified through the video clips.

Swati Maliwal, head of the Delhi government's Commission for Women, said that at least six women were raped every day in the Indian capital on New Delhi.
