'Avengers: Endgame is over, so what's next for Marvel's superheroes?

With the original team choosing their own path after the battle against Thanos, we look at the new team and their most likely foes.
PUBLISHED MAY 4, 2019

Contains spoilers for 'Avengers: Endgame'

When the 'Avengers' released in 2012, we saw Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) assemble a group of superheroes to protect the world from grave threats. The 'super-secret boy band' as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) famously put in 'Iron Man 2,' only expanded over the years. Come 'Endgame' and we saw the earth's mightiest heroes assemble against MCU phase three's most formidable foe.

What followed was one of the most epic showdowns that trumped all the previous Avenger- movies. In the end, the Avengers did not just obliterate Thanos, but also made sure that the world was back in order. But it did come at a cost as Iron Man and Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson)sacrificed themselves.

The final few minutes of the movie shows that the original superheroes more or less choose their own path. Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is shown to go back to his retired life. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) embarks on a new journey with the Guardians of the Galaxy making Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) the new king of Asgard. Captain America (Chris Evans) goes back to the past to live out a full life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

The original Avengers had more additions to the team over the years. (IMDb)

Leaving us to the newest additions to the team and a few questions.

Who will be the new Avengers?

In one phrase, it's everyone except the original team. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Falcon (Antony Mackie), White Wolf (Sebastian Stan), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Spiderman (Tom Holland), Ant Man and the Wasp (Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and of course, the GOTG crew of Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Peter Quill aka StarLord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

Who will be the one to bring them together as a team?

Nick Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders)

What will they be up to during the meantime?

We can guess. Between 'Civil War' and 'Infinity War,' we know that Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch have been spending time together. It could be possible that the duo were carrying out missions to help Cap and team by keeping a low-profile, and that might probably be the crux of the story in the upcoming miniseries, 'WandaVision.'

Captain Marvel could well be the leader of the new Avengers. (IMDb)

Who would be the biggest threat they would face?

MCU in its third phase showed Thanos as the ultimate villain. Loki and Ultron came close probably, but the best they could do was split the Avengers into teams. Thanos, on his part, didn't just split them apart but managed to snap them for a good five years. His defeat too saw some of the world's favorite Avengers pay the ultimate price.

With the Elementals confirmed as the key antagonists in 'Spiderman: Far from Home,' the first movie of MCU's phase 4, it remains to be seen if there is a new Avengers in the pipeline, although nothing has been confirmed. But there were subtle hints that maybe, just maybe,  Namor will be introduced as the biggest foe going forward.

Starting off with an underwater earthquake off the African coast that Okoye (Dane Gurira) mentions when the surviving group of Avengers update Widow with the developments. When asked how Wakanda looks to tackle it, the reply was that they would leave it alone thinking that it was a natural phenomenon.

The other reference dates back to 'Iron Man 2' when Fury meets Stark to discuss the Avengers initiative.  It was at that time he was seen looking at a map that fans have forever speculated that it might be the Atlantic ocean, deep down of which is Atlantis, Namor's underwater kingdom.

Namor could very well make an appearance in the fourth phase of MCU. (COMICVINE)

Who is Namor?

In comics, Namor is basically Marvel's version of Aquaman but has been a bit of a foe rather than a friend as he is seen plotting against the earth. According to Digital Spy, Namor is one of the oldest Marvel characters, created by writer Bill Everett. As per the comics, Namor was also touted to be the first mutant born to an Atlantean princess. He was shown possessing super-strength, flight abilities, and fish telepathy. It was also shown that he would team up with the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and X-Men at some point.

If Namor is the anti-hero, where and when does he show up?

With Okoye being the one to report the phenomenon, we feel like Namor could surface in Wakanda and face-off against the Black Panther. It does seem like the most logical explanation since the duo have faced off a couple of times in the comics.

Why are we looking at Namor right now?

There could be a pattern. Again, it's just speculation. We saw villains from other worlds- outer space, some created right here on earth (Utron & Killmonger, for instance) and then the Elementals. Also, someone has to replace the arrogance that Loki bought in along with Thanos' insanely commendable self-confidence. Hence, Namor.

Fate of the Avengers

At this moment, we are quite unsure if the heroes will unite again, but then with introductions being done in 'Endgame', we can guess that assistance is just a call away. The miniseries announced by Disney Plus in November will give us a chance to know what Falcon (The new Cap) and Winter Soldier might have been up to or will be up to. Dr. Strange, Cap Marvel, and the GOTG too will have their own share of baddies to deal with. Whether these baddies are linked to one another just like how all the foes in the Infinity saga is a question that will be answered over the next few years.
