Not long after Matt Lauer was spotted dining alone in the Hamptons, the disgraced former 'Today' host was banned from Al Roker’s 40th-anniversary bash that took place Friday, it was reported. Roker and Lauer were once the faces of the daytime show. On December 14, Roker celebrated his 40-year career with the company, while Lauer was effectively exiled.
It is worth noting the last time 'Today' celebrated a major anniversary was in January 2017, when then co-anchor Matt Lauer marked his 20th anniversary before eventually getting fired. However, this festive bash saw all of NBC's familiar faces including former staffer Katie Couric, who came back to the show's set to surprise Roker.
As for Lauer, one year after the sex scandal broke and in the wake of his divorce from Annette Roque, he has not been seen at any gatherings and has been away from the spotlight. His absence at Friday's celebration was reported by Radar Online. An unidentified insider told the publication "there was a discussion of Matt doing a video message, but executives cut that idea down."
“For a decade the show promoted Al and Matt as brothers, best friends, one big happy family,” the source added. “Now it’s awkward that they cannot invite ‘dad’ back to the family celebrations.”
The 60-year-old was ousted from the network last November when several women came forward to accuse him of "inappropriate sexual behavior" in and outside of the workplace. NBC announced Lauer’s termination in 2017 and his friends including Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb were heartbroken when he was fired.
Some reports suggest that Lauer has been outcasted, a few of his co-hosts have admitted to staying in touch with their former colleague, but no one has included him in NBC celebrations ever since and the network never announced plans to bring Lauer back to the 'Today' show.
