Fans of 'Legacies' do not seem to be happy with the show's take on the highly anticipated supernatural Merge between its two main characters, Lizzie and Josie Saltzman.
In 'The Vampire Diaries/ The Originals' universe, the Gemini witches have a ritual to select a leader which is called The Merge. The Gemini coven is a faction that was introduced in 'The Vampire Diaries' and then carried over to 'The Originals' where they've played crucial roles in the future of the supernatural beings of both shows. The ritual takes place when the set of chosen twins reach the age of 22. One twin takes the life force of the other and the latter dies in the process. On 'Legacies', Josie and Lizzie are the only two survivors of the Gemini coven - so there are no other options for a leader but them. The ritual combines their powers to one source and the stronger one of the twins absorbs all the powers from the other.
The lives and magic of the entire coven is bound to the leader, like how the vampires were sired to the Mikaelsons in 'The Originals'. So when the leader dies, so do the members of the coven and the spells that were cast stop. Fans are wondering why is it that Lizzie and Josie still have to merge even though there's no coven to lead. The last episode confirmed that The Merge is indeed coming.
"Lizzie and Josie are still alive even though their leader died. The spell that saved them still works without a leader. The spell isn't bound to the leader," explained a fan recalling the time in 'The Vampire Diaries' when the twins were placed magically in Caroline Forbes' womb after their mom Josette Parker died. "Then, why merge in the first place? They don't have a leader to replace, and this is very important to the merge storyline. Right now, they're both alive without the leader, so why would it change at 22? It's like the spell has an expiration date. You survive together until 22 and then you have to merge so we can have a leader to the dead coven," said the fan.
Another fan pointed out that the story probably got lost in the dramatization. "I think they just want a more dramatic storyline like with Elena in S2," the fan wrote, referring to Elena Gilbert in 'The Vampire Diaries', "When the only solution for her to survive Klaus ritual is to become a vampire so he could no longer use her doppelganger's blood. Elena being all sad and saying 'I don't want to be a vampire Stefan.' Neither one of twins might also want that for themselves. Writers made a mess revisiting this story. I mean they are both siphon witches.. In theory, it should never work. They don't have powers of their own. I guess they also want another set of twins. Maybe Lizzie will also get pregnant," said the fan mocking the storyline.
Siphoners, or Siphons, are a subsection of witches who do not have magic of their own but possess a rare power that allows them to siphon magic from other sources and use that magic for their own purposes. To conduct The Merge, they would have to have magic of their own.
'Legacies' really needs to find a way to tie the story together, said another annoyed fan, also implying that we may see more members from the coven soon. "I’m really interested to see how Julie Plec handles this mess up. I think they are going to ‘randomly find an answer’ like they always do for everything which is annoying to those of us who care for the story. I wonder if they will expose other Prison Worlds to show potential threats. I know they said the one for Kai and the heretics were the only ones but I think there may be more to the story. Will be interesting to play out." Prison World was created in 'The Vampire Diaries' to contain Kai Parker after he became evil - however, he broke free and killed Josette, his twin. There is only one Prison World known so far in 'The Vampire Diaries/ The Originals' universe.
