CBS' 'Star Trek' show starring Patrick Stewart teases series' new title with an exciting logo reveal

UPDATED MAY 24, 2019

A lot is going on for CBS. In a day full of announcements, the network has finally revealed the title of its new 'Star Trek' series starring Patrick Stewart. The series will be called 'Star Trek: Picard'. The story will follow the life of former Starfleet Captain Jean-Luc Picard as he adjusts to civilian life. While the series had been announced some time ago, the plans were already set in motion back in June 2018.

The announcement was made official on the show's Twitter account on Wednesday. They revealed the 'Star Trek: Picard's' logo and announced that it would be available in the United States and 200 other countries and could be streamed on Amazon Prime Video and CBS All Access when it comes it. However, the tweet didn't give away anything about the plotline or a peek into Picard's civilian avatar. The last time we saw Stewart was in 'Star Trek: Nemesis' which came out in 2002.

Whatever little information we have can be traced to an interview showrunner Alex Kurtzman had given earlier this year when he briefly outlined the plot revealing that a cataclysmic event depicted in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek movie impacted Picard in a big way. "Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire," he had said.

At the time when the plans of the series were still being put into action, Kurtzman, the showrunner had inked a five-year deal with the network to oversee the expansion of the Star Trek franchise. Further, as part of the agreement, he was said to be involved with at least four new shows, including an animated series.

"There is a very short list of writer-producer-directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with, and Alex and his Secret Hideout team are always at the top,” David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios, was quoted as saying. "His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. Alex has done remarkable work for our Studio, dating back seven years to the launch of ‘Hawaii Five-O,’ and we are thrilled that he, Heather and their team will be partnering with us for a long time to come," added Stapf.

The creative team behind the series will consist of Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, and Kirsten Beyer. Kurtzman, Duff, Goldsman, and Chabon will also serve as executive-producers with Trevor Roth, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Stewart himself.

Space.com reports that principal photography has begun in Los Angeles, and the first season will run for 10 episodes. Some known members of the cast joining Stewart will be Santiago Cabrera ("Transformers: The Last Knight" and "Salvation"), Isa Briones ("American Crime Story"), Alison Pill ("Snowpiercer" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"), Harry Treadaway ("Penny Dreadful"), Michelle Hurd ("Hawaii Five-0") and Evan Evagora ("Secret City").

This news comes soon after the network unveiled four new trailers for its TV roster.
