Marvel's plans for Spider-Man can get back on track now that the Disney-Sony drama is finally over

Though a third Spider-Man movie wasn't announced for either phase, we did know it was coming. Plus, the way things ended in 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' made it quite clear that Peter's story was far from over.

After over a month of drama and speculation, Tom Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man is finally back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, albeit for just one more movie.  It was earlier announced that Spider-Man would no longer be part of the Marvel Universe as Disney and Sony could not come to an agreement on a new financing deal. The two companies announced on Friday that Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, will produce the new film with Holland reprising the role once again.

Holland had the perfect response to the good news, sharing a short clip from 'The Wolf of Wall Street' on Instagram. The video in question, quite appropriately (or inappropriately, if you're a stickler for language like Captain America), shows the moment when Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the film shouts, "I'm not f*cking leaving!"

The return is going to be a brief one but it will probably be enough to set the MCU back on course for Phase 4 and Phase 5. Though a third Spider-Man movie wasn't announced for either phase, we did know it was coming and that it would probably be a part of Phase 5, though now it seems the movie will now be a part of Phase 4 instead. Plus, the way things ended in 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' made it quite clear that Peter's story was far from over.

There were certain rumors doing the rounds online that Spider-Man's exit had made Disney lose confidence in Captain Marvel and the present plans for the MCU's future. Now that Peter's back home (again), those plans can move forward, though probably at an accelerated rate.

'Spider-Man 3' will most likely be concerned with the fallout of Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) outing Peter Parker as Spider-Man at the end of 'Far From Home'. It will also have to give the character a good exit from the franchise but preferably one that isn't too final as it looks like Sony still has plans for the character.

In all probability, the threequel will give Spidey a soft exit that removes him from the center of the MCU but doesn't permanently end his story. And even though he might not be able to become "the next Tony Stark" like 'Far From Home' built him up to be, at least Marvel has one more movie left in which they can find him a worthy successor.

The as-yet-untitled 'Spider-Man 3' is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 16, 2021.
