The LA police department is currently investigating the death of a 5-year-old pit bull that was allegedly physically as well as sexually assaulted. The poor creature was found badly abused in front of a home in south Los Angeles on August 6. According to Ghetto Rescue, which is a police-founded group, the dog's aorta had been ruptured and there were many severe signs of vaginal trauma. The group named the dog Cargo and posted on Facebook, "We know based on her sad demeanor she was mistreated in the short time she was out of the shelter".
"The only thing we can be thankful for is she did not die on the sidewalk alone," they continued. The LAPD's Animal Cruelty Task Force is investigating the allegations and has also served a search warrant in the case, the Orange County Register reported. LAPD Det. Al Erkelens said, "There are two possible crimes, bestiality which is a misdemeanor, and intentional injury to the dog that was meant to inflict pain, suffering or death to the dog".
"If [someone] did something to cause the aorta to rupture, that is a felony," he continued. He also revealed that his unit responds to around 10 cases of bestiality a year. "Sexual assaults with dogs does occur. Most cases are reported either because they are seen or someone tells someone about it".
According to a south LA resident who spoke to KTLA, two men dropped off the dog in the neighborhood. The resident also attempted to contact city and county animal control but she was unable to get a response which is why she reached out to Ghetto Rescue. Dianty Marquez from Ghetto Rescue shared that Cargo was in pain when she arrived on the scene.
"Head down, she had a rope tied to her neck and she wasn’t going anywhere," she said. She managed to lift the dog into her car and rushed to an emergency vet clinic. Unfortunately, Cargo did not make it and passed away the very next day. "We come across a lot of different abuse cases and it’s definitely one of those I’m not going to forget," Marquez said. "It’s going to stick with me".
So far, no arrests have been made. The terrible and shocking incident has got a lot of attention and got the social hashtag #CargoStrong inspiring people to adopt animals in the name that she was given.
