This article contains spoilers for 'Perpetual Grace, LTD' episode 4.
The beginning of 'Perpetual Grace, LTD' begs the question as to what could be the connection between a couple of conmen and an old pastor of a church. What could possibly link these three different kinds of people and not be jarring? Turns out death certificates can play a convincing role in bringing the three together. In the fourth episode of the show, titled 'I am Felipe Guillermo Usted part 2', we learn more about the man who is training to become an astronaut and has just a week left to complete the final phase of his training.
The man who helps Jimmi, who is acting like Byron Brown (Ben Kingsley) and his wife Lillian's (Jackie Weaver) son, to acquire their death certificate wanted to become an astronaut. It was his lifelong dream that could only be achieved after he earned money doing things that are best left unspoken in public.
He is Felipe Guillermo Usted (Efren Ramirez), and now that he is in the final phase of training, he learns from James that the man he helped acquire a death certificate for is not dead. Not just that, he also learns that Byron has escaped and is no longer under Hector Contreras' (Luis Guzmán) control. He will have to leave the training midway to sort things out in Mexico and sadly, Felipe cannot continue his training because he would turn 43-years-old by the time he returns. There is an age cap on training to be an astronaut and so Felipe understands that his dream may never be fulfilled.
Hector finally realizes that Byron is not on his way to the consulate, but is headed to his captor's home. Who can forget the fury that Byron had felt when he and his wife were imprisoned? It is no surprise then that he would have a point to prove. Even if Hector did originally plan to abandon his wife and sons for the woman he was having an affair with, he cannot let them be hurt now, can he?
And as all of this unfolds, we see James realize that Glenn Pirdoo (Dash Williams), the kid from the pawnshop that he sent to Mexico to meet a banker and deposit money as payment for Hector, goes missing. We get a peek at Glenn's past and realize that he was abandoned by his mother and later, even his father.
He ran the pawn shop by himself and formed a weird bond with James in the initial episodes. So when we hear about his disappearance, we wonder - if he is a conman too. Did he just make a fool out of James? If so, did he know the truth about who hit him to steal the pearls from his pawn shop?
Lillian also shows a side of her we knew always existed when she tied the hair of a young girl to a train they were on so that she can create a distraction and escape from the crowd that was holding her captive. She is not your adorable sweet Ma who bakes and sings hymns, and can get pretty nasty when she puts her mind to it. No wonder Byron trusted her to escape by herself.
All of these initial questions are answered slowly but definitely and we also meet a new character who is headed to the U.S. from Britain. 'Perpetual Grace, LTD' really is more about its colorful characters and their quirks and the recent episode further proved these characters can charm viewers.
