A new study has found that children are increasingly developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — an anxiety disorder characterized by a failure to recover after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event —before the age of 18 due to suffering assault or sexual violence.

According to the Daily Mail, the distressing figures highlighting the prevalence of childhood trauma in the UK were published in The Lancet Psychiatry after a study conducted by the King's College in London.

The study, which looked at 2,064 children born in England and Wales between 1994 and 1995 and measured risk factors for PTSD prospectively over four previous assessments between age 5 and 12 years, said one in 13  develop the disorder before the age of 18 as a direct consequence of suffering assault, injury, or sexual violation.
