Superorganism, the art-pop outfit from around all around the world, released their self-titled debut album on Friday (Mar 2). The release came via London based label Domino Record Co.
The quirky octet formed in 2017 out of far-spread friendships across Japan, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Maine. Originally creating music and visuals over the Internet, Superorganism really took shape when they moved into an East London house, where they put together a DIY studio and recorded what would become their self-titled debut.
In an interview with Dazed, the band discussed working with such a big group of people. “When you get a big group of people like that together, they function as one, that’s how that works. Full hive mind. In that way, the band is just a cult (laughs),” Emily of Superorganism explains.
Produced, engineered, mixed and designed entirely by members of the band, Superorganism is idiosyncratic pop that feels like something completely new yet perfectly fitting in 2018.
“I kind of realized retrospectively after we finished the record that the central theme of it all is the way that things connect in the world," said guitarist/songwriter/producer Harry in an interview with Consequence of Sound last month. The band had previously released three singles from the album: 'Everybody Wants To Be Famous,' 'It’s All Good,' and 'Reflections On A Screen.'
The debut album has been fairly well received with Pitchfork giving it a score of 7.8, calling it "a hugely accomplished reflection of the present, a magpie-friendly collage of pop."
