Lynyrd Skynyrd will embarks on its final tour this spring, bringing an end to an iconic career that spans over half a century. The two-year "Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour" launches May 4 in West Palm Beach, with the North American leg of the tour wrapping up on September 1st at the Cellars Amphitehatre at Lakewood in Atlanta.
But before the tour kicks off, the Southern rock icons will play a special, intimate show in Atlanta, reports Rolling Stone.
Skynyrd is partnering with SiriusXM for a handful of subscriber-only events, including an invitation-only show at Atlanta's Buckhead Theatre on March 15. Subscribers will have the opportunity to win tickets to the private performance through an email invite. Listeners who have subscribed to SiriusXM since February 8 will also have the chance to win a fully paid trip to Atlanta, in addition to a pair of tickets to the show. You can find more details here.
Meanwhile, SiriusXM will launch the “Free Bird” channel on March 2 on Channel 30. Programming will showcase music from Skynyrd’s career, concert footage, as well as interviews and hosting sessions with band members Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant. The channel will include southern rock classics from artists including The Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and ZZ Top.
Along the way, Lynyrd Skynyrd will also perform at Charlie Daniels' annual Volunteer Jam in Nashville on March 7th, reports Rolling Stone. The Volunteer Jam appearances have become a longtime tradition for the band, whose members played their first show following their catastrophic plane crash of 1977 – which resulted in the death of singer Ronnie Van Zandt, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines – at Daniels' Volunteer Jam 1979.
This year, they'll share the bill with a handful of country and classic rock acts, including Alabama and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons.
The Buckhead Theatre concert will also air live at 9 p.m. March 15 on the “Free Bird” channel, online, via the SiriusXM mobile app. Tickets for the Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour are available now. Complete ticketing information is available on the band's website.
