Ariana Grande, 24, was slated to deliver an emotional tribute to victims of the Manchester terror attack at the BRIT Awards tonight, but she pulled out merely hours before she was due to perform, throwing event organizers into chaos as they scrambled to fix the mess.
A source told the Mirror, "It was utter chaos when the call came in that Ariana couldn't do it. It's race against time to get someone to do what is very much the centrepiece of the entire show."
The tribute was supposed to be the talking point of the show, and Ariana's appearance had been kept a secret. However, now that she has dropped out, the cat's out of the bag. Liam Gallagher, who used be the lead singer of Oasis, has reportedly stepped in to fill the void left by Ariana's sudden withdrawal.
The Wonderwall singer had previously performed at the One Love concert headlined by Ariana in June to raise funds for the victims of the terror attack, so he seems to be a fitting replacement. Other performers at the concert included Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, and Take That.
Last May, fans exiting the venue of one of Ariana's concerts were attacked by an ISIS bomber, Salman Abedi, who detonated a nail bomb in the crowd, killing 22 people, with the youngest victim being eight years old.
The tribute was planned in response to the tragedy, with a source telling The Sun, "It will be the biggest talking point of the night. The whole industry wants to come together to pay their respects to the victims. The effects of that terrible night resonated far and wide in the music industry and it’s only right everyone comes together to pay their respects."
Scooter Braun, Ariana's manager, had previously revealed that the singer had taken the loss personally, telling Cal Fussman on his podcast, "When she found out that fans of hers had died she was so sad. She cried for days, she felt everything - every face they announced, every name, she wore on her sleeve. Every bit of emotion because that’s who she is."
However, her sudden decision to abandon her tribute has left us wondering what could have possibly happened to have put a spoke in her plans.
