Based on the book 'Caging Skies' by Christine Leunens, 'Jojo Rabbit' is a dark comedy-drama written and directed by Taika Waititi. The movie is all set for its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019. The satire follows a lonely German boy (Roman Griffin Davis as JoJo) whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic.

Release date

The film is scheduled for an October 18, 2019, release by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Plot

Set during World War II, an awkward young German boy whose only ally is his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler has his naïve patriotism tested when he meets a young girl who upends his world views. Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

Waititi, also the writer and director of the film, will be seen as Adolf Hitler in the movie. The filmmaker also played Thomas Kalmaku in the 2011 superhero film 'Green Lantern' and also starred in films like 'Boy' and 'What We Do in the Shadows'. Other actors in the film include Sam Rockwell as Captain Klenzendorf, Rebel Wilson as Fräulein Rahm, Stephen Merchant as Captain Deertz and Alfie Allen as Finkel.

Waititi, who hails from New Zealand, has written and directed the film. The filmmaker, actor, and comedian was nominated for an Academy Award for his 2004 short film 'Two Cars, One Night'. In 2017, he directed 'Thor: Ragnarok', in which he also played the character Korg. Later, he was seen as Korg in the 2019 movie 'Avengers: Endgame' as well. Waititi also produced the movie in association with Carthew Neal and Chelsea Winstanley. While it is being produced by Fox Searchlight Pictures, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute it.
