Model Lauren Wasser loses second leg to Toxic Shock Syndrome, but her reaction will inspire you

Lauren Wasser, 29, who had lost her right leg to a toxic shock syndrome from a tampon in 2012, had to face her worst fears of losing her left leg to the disorder as well. She had to undergo surgery to amputate the other. To learn about her history with toxic shock syndrome (TSS) find it here. She contracted a life-threatening infection toxic shock syndrome after using a "super-plus" tampon while on her period. Since then she has been an advocate of raising awareness of how hazardous the misuse and use of tampons can be for women and young girls.

The Los Angeles based model feared only last month that she might lose her left leg because she was experiencing "daily excruciating pain" as a result of the TSS. Most, unfortunately, her predictions came true and the doctors had to amputate her second leg as well. However, she had been preparing for it to happen for quite some time and has a refreshing and inspiring outlook towards how different her life is going to be.

She mentions in an Instagram post - "Life is about to be so different, again! I’m in great spirits though and ready for my next chapter." There is no stopping the double below-the-knee amputee from continuing to follow her dreams of modeling alongside creating awareness of the possible risks associated with tampons. She has already begun getting used to her new life with two prosthetic legs instead of one.

We know that she had prepared for the amputation of her second leg because she had earlier said - "In a few months, I’m inevitably going to have my other leg amputated. There’s nothing I can do about it. But what I can do is help make sure that this doesn’t happen to others."

One might argue saying that the tampon companies flash a warning sign on their boxes saying that the tampon should not be left in for more than eight hours—and doing so might result in an infection—which then is not the fault of tampon but the misuse of it. However, Wasser claims that she was not guilty of misusing the tampon and had in fact been changing it very frequently while she was experiencing symptoms of the infection.

Lauren was earlier required to have a surgery to shave down the bone that kept growing through her feet because of a combination of excess production of calcium and the brain signaling her missing toes to grow back. She could not even wet her foot due to an open ulcer. Even though it had become unbearable to walk at times, Wasser kept her hopes high and continued to model for brands like Nordstrom and Kenneth Cole's Courageous Class campaign using her gold prosthetic leg.

She has also been urging the National Institutes of Health to privately test feminine hygiene products to determine their safety. Most importantly she invests her time in spreading awareness against the blind-trust in hygiene products. She has also brought up her concerns in a TED Talk while sharing the story of her condition and career.

She is an advocate for a bill called the Robin Danielson Act - named after a woman who died from TSS in 1988 which requires feminine hygiene product companies to disclose exactly what is in their products and what their long-term health effects can be. However, the bill has been rejected 10 times in the past. She requires our support to support her and every other woman in this endeavor.
