On Monday night, Serena Williams made a stunning comeback as the top women's tennis player at the Tie Break Tens tournament in Madison Square Garden. This comes after the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian.
Serena played with alongside her sister Venus Williams. The Williams sister were the headliners for Monday's tournament. The eight-woman event had matches that were 10-point tiebreakers instead of the usual game sets.
Venus had only praise for her sister. “She’s got power, depth. She knows how to play,” Venus said.
However, pregnancy didn't stop Serena's tennis aspiration. Serena won the Austrailian Open last year while she was eight weeks pregnant.
Serena is playing for the first time this year in a bid to prepare her to return to the WTA Tour since giving birth. The 23-time Grand Slam champion faced post-birth complications. Serena opened up to Vogue about how she developed several small blood clots in her lungs after she had given birth.
But the champion got through that dark period lie a true pro. Serena's been an inspiration to women all around the world. She recently featured in a Nike ad that speaks volumes about what drives her.
The ad dropped a few days ahead of International Women's Day. The ad, titled 'Until We Win It All', has the pro-athlete calling out all the negative things she heard about herself during her tennis career.
In the voiceover, she counts them all out, saying: "I've never been the right kind of woman. Oversized and overconfident. Too mean if I don’t smile. Too black for my tennis whites. Too motivated for motherhood. But I am proving, time and time again, there’s no wrong way to be a woman.”
And boy, is she proving all of them wrong! Serena is such an inspiration and continues to be the perfect role model for women and young girls everywhere. We can only stand in awe of her drive and power!
