Why Serena Williams' biased views on motherhood angered feminists globally?

Feminists around the world are fuming at Serena Wiliams. They think the tennis player's comments on motherhood and childbirth are so ill-informed that they're calling it 'ridiculous' and 'brainless.' Their anger stems from her recent interview with Australia's Stellar Magazine.

Wiliams is due to deliver her first baby soon and like any another new mom, she is nervous and excited about her new journey. While speaking about her new role as a mother, the grand slam champion said, "I have so much respect for so many women [for giving birth]. I am about to be a real woman now, you know? It’s going to be something incredibly impressive to go through." And it was this 'real woman' comment that enraged feminists.

Feminists on Twitter said women are 'real' irrespective of whether or not one is a mom. One user wrote, "You don’t have to have children to be ‘a real woman’. How shallow." Another tweet went like this: "What a ridiculous comment! I am not "less of a woman" because I don't have children."

But Wiliams is usually held as a champion for feminism. She's been a motivation for pregnant women, proving that they can be physically fit even if they're carrying a child. She's been working out at the gym even in her third trimester and recently said, "You just have to prove to yourself that you can go out there and be the best that you can be and not prove anything to anyone," according to The Guardian.

To be sure, Williams' real woman comment signals her happiness about being able to experience a facet of womanhood. Like most soon-to-be moms, the grand slam champion expressed her nervousness about embarking on this new journey as well.

Williams and her fiancé Alexis Ohanian are expecting their first baby in in the last week of August or the first week of September. The tennis champion gave voice to most women's fears when she told Stellar Magazine that she's scared to give birth but hopes it gives her enough confidence and strength later.

Although she has never addressed the sex of her child, her sister Venus accidentally blurted out that the couple is expecting a girl. When Williams' new born is welcomed to the world, she will no doubt watch her mom play on the tennis field as the player said she can't wait to see her kid in the player's box in 2018.
