Ready Player One trailer: Notable Easter Eggs and references you may have missed

Steven Spielberg's upcoming sci-fi movie Ready Player One looks to be a nostalgia-fueled pop culture trip for viewers. The film is packed with easter eggs and references from various decades but mostly the 1980s!

While the film takes place in the future and revolves around the virtual reality world of the OASIS, it’s packed to the gills with references to books, movies, video games, cartoons, and much more.

Making a movie such as this can be tricky considering how many different IPs (Intellectual Property) are involved. Imagine bringing Speed Racer and the Batmobile together or showing King Kong climbing buildings and Chucky slashing throats in the same film. Well, that's where Steven Spielberg came in.

As it turns out, Warner Bros. landed possibly the only director who could both navigate the various licensing issues and cut great deals.

"I wasn't sure you could have a Mecha Godzilla fighting Ultra Man and get away with that and not get sued into oblivion, but that was what's amazing with having Steven Spielberg coming on board," said Ready Player One author Ernest Cline at a recent event.

"The example I always used was Who Framed Roger Rabbit, because they managed to get a bunch of different properties into one movie. That was Steven Spielberg, and with Ready Player One he made that happen. We weren't able to get everything we wanted, but we got the vast majority... It's amazing how many people want their IP involved in a Spielberg movie."

A new trailer arrived over the weekend that revealed even more Easter Eggs in the film, including a character from the fairly new video game Overwatch, King Kong, and more than one Street Fighter character.

Here are some of the notable ones that we spotted:

Speed Racer and the '60s Batmobile

In one of the opening shots of the trailer, we see cars getting ready for a race, but look closely and you'll see some familiar models. Namely the Mach 5 from Speed Racer over to the left, and the 1960s Batmobile in the foreground.

You can also see Street Fighter’s Ryu walking through the crowd, towards the left.

DeLorean (from Back To The Future)

This one’s not hard to spot, as the protagonist Wade Watts’ (Tye Sheridan) signature mode of transportation in the OASIS is the DeLorean from Back to the Future.

Freddy Krueger and Duke Nukem

Freddy Krueger (R) gets blown up during an action sequence while Duke Nukem can be seen in the centre.

Everyone’s favorite rubber 90s toy shows up as graffiti in the Stacks.

Iron Giant

At the end of the trailer, you can see Iron Giant charging towards something in that looks like a battlefield.

Kaneda’s Bike

Olivia Cooke’s character Art3mis rides Kaneda’s bike from Akira in the OASIS.

Harley Quinn and Deadshot

While this could be Deadpool here, Deadshot makes more sense as that character is owned by Warner Bros outright and can be easily used here in this movie. He’s seen with another DC villain, Harley Quinn.

King Kong

The mighty King Kong strikes his iconic pose over the towers at OASIS.

Harley Quinn and Joker

Tracer, Lara Croft, and Chun-Li

In this hero shot, we see Tracer from the video game Overwatch, Street Fighter’s Chun-Li right there next to her, and Lara Croft over to the left somewhat in the background.

Everyone’s favorite killer doll from Child’s Play can be seen doing what he does best—murdering some folks.
