Meryl Streep is starring in HBO's Big Little Lies season 2, and we can't help but get excited

HBO has landed a Hollywood icon for season 2 of Big Little Lies. HBO announced Wednesday that three-time Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is joining the already-stacked cast of the limited series.

Yes, the iconic Meryl Streep will play Mary Louise Wright—the mother of Kidman's on-screen abusive husband Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard) who comes to Monterey concerned about the welfare of her grandchildren and suspicious about her son’s death—in the next season.

Here’s HBO’s description of her character: “Concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son’s death, Mary Louise arrives in Monterey searching for answers.”

Perhaps we’ll even get some throwback scenes with her and Perry, as it has previously been reported that Skarsgard will return to the show for flashbacks. This is the first new cast member announcement for Season 2, with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman both returning to reprise their roles.

Kidman confirmed the news by posting a photo of herself with Streep on Instagram. “Welcome to the #BigLittleLies family Miss Streep - can’t wait xx,” she wrote in the caption.

Streep’s previous major television role was the 2003 miniseries Angels in America. She also did a three-episode stint on Showtime’s Web Therapy in 2010.

The first season of Big Little Lies was already an awards-season favorite, scoring eight Emmys and four Golden Globes.

The original Big Little Lies cast includes Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley—though there's been no confirmation yet on whether Kravitz and Woodley will definitely return for the seven-episode season.

David E. Kelley will return to pen all seven episodes of Big Little Lies Season 2, while Jean-Marc Vallée will hand the directorial reins over to Andrea Arnold, who recently helmed the experimental series I Love Dick and the runaway film American Honey.

The second season will be partially based on a new story from Liane Moriarty, who wrote the eponymous novel.
