Around 9 years ago, the Duggar family experienced one of the scariest moments ever when the youngest and, to be exact, 19th sibling Josie Duggar was born around three months premature.
The family took to Instagram to share some throwback pictures of Josie Brooklyn Duggar including two shots of her as a baby hooked up to cords in an incubator at the hospital. They captioned the picture, "Josie was born on December 10, 2009, at 25 1/2 weeks gestation and weighed 1 pound 6 ounces." Josie was born 25 weeks after her mother Michelle Duggar was diagnosed with a condition called preeclampsia.
According to Mayo Clinic, preeclampsia is defined as "a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys. Left untreated, preeclampsia can lead to serious — even fatal — complications."
Little Josie weighed around 1 lb., 6 oz when she was born. Around eight days after her birth, her bowel perforated, her parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar shared with PEOPLE. Josie had to be rushed to Arkansas Children’s Hospital after being born at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas.
At the time, her physician Dr. Robert Arrington explained, "She developed a spontaneous bowel perforation. She responded to the placement of an abdominal drain, plus antibiotics, and did not require an open operation."
This was very relieving news to her scared parents. Jim Bob shared, "Dr. Arrington knows how to think outside the box and come up with different creative solutions. Josie is walking a daily tightrope to keep her vitals stable and the nurses and the whole team here has been wonderful."
Almost a decade later, little Josie Brooklyn Duggar is healthy and happy. In her birthday tribute, the family wrote that she is "a healthy, happy 9-year old that is full of energy. We are so thankful for everyone’s prayers and all of the doctors and nurses at Arkansas Children’s Hospital that saved her life." They also spoke about how it was a very difficult time for them but their faith in God got them through. "That was the most difficult time in our family’s life but by God’s grace Josie and our whole family made it through!" they added.
Many fans and followers took to social media to send their birthday wishes to the family. One fan wrote, "I will never forget hearing about Josie’s early birth, I followed your updates so closely. I know it has been hard sharing so much of your life publicly, but I want to thank you for showing [God's] love through your family!!" Another fan added, "I remember when Josie was born and so tiny. The power of prayer can do awesome things! So many people were praying for her (including myself)!"
