Nearly half of Americans admit to wearing same underwear for two days or more in a row

Almost half of all Americans wear their underwear for two days or longer in a row, a new survey from an underwear company shows.

Underwear company Tommy John conducted a survey of over 2,000 men and women in order to see how long they wear and keep their underwear.

As reported by People, the company shared, "To find out more about the intimate hygiene habits of America’s, well, intimates, we surveyed 2,000 men and women to see how long they wear and keep their underwear. Spoiler alert: America could use an underwear overhaul."

In the first two studies, 1000 participants were questioned on their daily underwear habits.

Around 45 percent of the people "admitted to having worn the same pair of underwear for two or more days," while 13 percent "claimed to have worn the same pair for a week or more."

The brand also added women were found to be much cleaner than men.

The study has also suggested that men are "2.5 times as likely as women to wear their underwear for a week or more."

According to the second survey which also saw 1,000 people participating, measured how long Americans hold on to the same pair of underwear before discarding it.

The results showed that around 46 percent have owned the same piece of underwear for around a year or more. The underwear brand shared that "38 percent claimed that they have no idea how long they’ve had their underwear."

Tommy John added that these results were "split fairly evenly between men and women, which throws any theories out the window that women are more hygiene-conscious than men, or vice versa."

The company also highlighted how unsanitary and unhygienic this can be given that even clean underwear can contain up to 10,000 living bacteria.

Tommy John pointed out unsanitary underwear accumulates microorganisms and fungal germs which can increase the chances of you picking up illnesses such as yeast and UTIs.

The company also offered some tips for better hygiene and said that "tumble dry your underwear on low heat for 30 minutes after washing" to reduce the number of bacteria in the underwear.

They also advised against washing underwear in the same washing load as your partner or family.
