'American Sicario ' charts the rise and fall of Dallas-born drug-trafficker Erik Vasquez (Philippe A Haddad) who aims at becoming the top dog of the Mexican underworld. The crime thriller, directed by RJ Collins, also stars Danny Trejo in a key supporting role and the movie follows Vasquez's journey to vanquish his competition only to make more enemies during his journey. His actions lead to his closest allies revolting against him and that forms the crux of the story.

The final minutes of the movie imply that Vasquez is killed by one of his former henchmen. Sebastian (Paolo Cesar) is one of his most trusted lieutenants whose sister is killed by Vasquez in a test of loyalty to his potential employer. This leads to a fallout between the mob man and his trusty help who refers to him as a hermano (brother). In what becomes a bloodbath against one of his rivals, Roberto Feliz (Maurice Compte) in the final few minutes, Vasquez enlists the DEA's help and makes a deal with them to deliver the gangster.

'American Sicario' Ending Explained: Does Erik Vasquez die in prison?

A day before Vasquez is expedited to the States after being locked up, the warden who tortures the gangster for information following the bloody war against Roberto decides to spring one last surprise on him. He allows Sebastian to meet him one last time who exacts his revenge by stabbing Vasquez multiple times. The next sequence sees Sicario lying down with shock and guilt etched all over his face. The next scene is a passing shot of the desert in Mexico that has Trejo's voice narrating that a man would know when his death arrives — "When it happens, you'll see it coming."

This pretty much suggests that Vasquez indeed died in the prison even before he was expedited. There is no mention of Trejo or his pregnant daughter, Gloria (Cali Morales) who flees the safehouse to keep the unborn baby safe. Barring Sebastian who gets his revenge, most of Vasquez's men die in the final showdown against Roberto and his gang.
