'Almost Family' Episode 5 'Risky AF': Amanda's son plays cupid for her and Edie as their relationship gets intense
Spoilers ahead for season 1 episode 5 of 'Almost Family' titled 'Risky AF'
There is a lot that can be argued about Edie (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and her ongoing relationship with Amanda (Victoria Cartagena). While cheating on her husband is outright wrong, especially when Tim (Mo McRae) hopes to have kids with her, Edie is playing games with herself as she gets deeper and deeper into the mess.
But 'Risky AF' finally shows the intensity of their relationship.
Edie happens to accidentally meet Amanda's son, played by Jian Harrell, as he is preparing for a mock trial. Unaware that he is Amanda's son, Edie is immediately taken by him.
Later, at Amanda's house, Edie is helping him prepare for the mock trial. Their evening is going alright till Edie gets a call from Tim. Earlier in the episode, Edie refuses to go to Tim's grandmother's 80th birthday celebrations with his family. She had told him that it is because of work, specifically Leon Bechley's (Timothy Hutton) case and the stress stemming from it. She promises him that she will be available on call to wish his grandmother. When Tim calls, Edie answers, but it immediately disrupts things between her and Amanda.
Desperate to find some advice, Edie seeks help from the messiest person she knows: Julia (Brittany Snow), who tells that she is proud of Edie for being strong and vulnerable. Julia offers her support, despite how their previous encounter ended. She also advises her to be careful because the stakes the high and Julia doesn't wish to see Edie get hurt.
Following Julia's advice, Edie goes back to meet Amanda, this time taking a little present for her son. But Amanda is clearly hurt with Eddie's lies and double life. When she tells Edie about her doubts about their relationship, Edie, for the first time, expresses her love for Amanda.
Edie had never felt this way before meeting Amanda. She had a life, albeit a dissatisfactory one, that she was used to, a life that she was trying to come to terms to. But when she met Amanda, she simply fell in love. "I had a life I could manage, but you came along and you rearranged my molecules," she tells her in a very emotional scene.
Perhaps you could say that Amanda's son played cupid. Yet when Edie returns home, she finds Tim back from the celebrations earlier than planned. It looks like Tim is suspicious of Edie, but the question is if she will come clean or he will find out by himself.
'Almost Family' airs on Wednesdays at 9 pm ET/PT on Fox.
