'Watchmen' showrunner reveals that there's been a year's time lapse for Adrian Veidt between each episode

Adrian Veidt has been in his specialized prison a lot longer than we thought, with five years having already passed since his first appearance on the show

Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) has been missing for a while -- long enough to be officially declared dead by the FBI. Viewers of the show, however, know that Adrian Veidt is alive and well, albeit trapped in a prison he’s trying desperately to escape from. We’ve seen more of his time there than we knew, however, as according to showrunner David Lindelof, the scenes containing Adrian Veidt’s appearances are time lapsed by a year, each episode.

"What we're learning about Adrian Veidt is that every installment that we get of the nine episodes, there's only one episode where you don't get a Veidt installment -- the storytelling, he didn't fit in there -- but every other one you get [one]," Lindelof said, in an interview with Comicbook.com. "And a year lapses in between each episode. It's a story told on a very, very large canvas, each installment taking place on another anniversary of another year that he has spent wherever the hell he's spending [it]."

While this does explain some things -- the proliferance of the anniversary cakes that Veidt keeps receiving from his cloned servants, for example -- it brings up a few others. How far out of sync are Adrian Veidt’s scenes with the rest of ‘Watchmen’? Will the timelines eventually merge and see Veidt joining the rest of the cast, or is Veidt’s story play out like his plan to drop a squid on New York -- finished before any of the heroes could do anything about it?

With several more episodes to go before the series ends, Ozymandias still has a few years left for his journey, wherever it may take him. Considering his journey started on one of Jupiter’s moons, that journey could take him to some very strange places indeed.

The next episode of ‘Watchmen’ airs December 1, on HBO
