A third of Americans think Blackface is acceptable as a Halloween costume, Pew survey finds

The issue has become a red hot topic after top Democratic politicians in Virginia came under fire for wearing Blackface during college
PUBLISHED FEB 12, 2019

A new Pew Research survey has made a shocking revelation, stating that nearly one in three Americans believe that wearing blackface is "always or sometimes" acceptable, as long as it's part of a Halloween costume.

Blackface is the practice of wearing makeup and costumes by non-black people to appear as a person of color. The practice, which is seen as a disparaging stereotype, is strongly criticized by the Aboriginal community, civil rights, and anti-discrimination groups and activists.

The center said that white adults are "about twice as likely" as black adults to approve the act, with 39 percent of those polled saying it is okay for a white person to use makeup to darken their skin when dressing up as a member of a different race. However, only 19 percent of black respondents felt the same way, according to the New York Post.
