'A Teacher': Release date, plot, cast and everything you need to know about FX's upcoming drama series starring Kate Mara

The series explores the story behind the mugshot of a female high school teacher, Claire (Mara), caught in an affair with her male student, revealing the complexities and consequences of these illegal relationships

The upcoming FX series, 'A Teacher' starring Kate Mara is based on Hannah Fiddell’s 2013 feature film of the same name. The film is an independent drama about a female high school teacher's illicit sexual relationship with a male student that grows from infatuation into an obsession.  It was released on video on demand on August 2013, prior to being released in a limited release on September 2013 in the United States. Fidell wrote, produced, directed the film which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.

Emmy-nominee, Kate Mara will be playing the teacher in the series. Here's what we know about the show so far:

Release

An air date for the 10-episode series hasn't been announced yet. But with filming underway, expect the drama to make an appearance by the end of the year or early 2020. 

Plot

The series will borrow its plot from the 2013 movie. According to Variety, the series explores the story behind the mugshot of a female high school teacher, Claire (Mara), caught in an affair with her male student, Eric (Robinson), revealing the complexities and consequences of these illegal relationships. The lead character's name, however, has changed from Diana Watts (Played by Lindsay Burdge) to Claire. 

While the story ends on a bitter note for Watts in the movie, it remains to be seen if Fidell will try and introduce a twist in the series.

Mara recently appeared in the first season of the FX shows 'Pose' and 'American Horror Story'. Previously, she starred in the first season of the Netflix series 'House of Cards'. Her film credits include 'The Martian', 'Fantastic Four', and 'Shooter'.

Nick Robinson as Eric

Robinson recently starred in the movie, 'Love, Simon' in the title role. His other works include 'Jurassic World' and 'The Kings of Summer'. On TV, he was a series regular on the Freeform series 'Melissa & Joey'

Director/Writer

Fidell will write and direct the series in addition to serving as an executive producer. She'll be joined by Mara, Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman, and Danny Brocklehurst. FX Productions will produce the series.

According to THR, FX President of originals, Gina Balian in a statement, said: "Hannah Fidell is an exceptional filmmaker we have long admired for her intuitive ability to bring complex stories to life with depth and grace. We are thrilled to partner with Hannah, Kate Mara, Michael Costigan, Jason Bateman and Danny Brocklehurst to adapt A Teacher into a limited series for FX, with Kate leading an extraordinary cast along with Nick Robinson."
