LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

The second season is highly anticipated by fans of the Westerosi world and is expected to be a major draw for the streaming platform, which is leaving no stone unturned in its extensive marketing efforts for the series.

The epic-action adventure is being marketed as a war between two factions, Team Green and Team Black. Team Green are the houses and warriors who support Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and her quest to keep her son King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) on the throne.

On the other hand, Team Black consists of those who support Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's (Emma D' Arcy) claim to the Iron Throne.

While fans are overwhelmingly excited about the return of their favorite series, there is also some discontent among certain fans regarding the focus on tribalism and the reduction of the plot to factions. Some voiced their opinions strongly and vociferously online.

Fans disagree with the Team Green vs Team Black discourse.

Fans feel that the entire discourse about Team Green and Team Black is diverting attention from the core issue of patriarchy and how King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) mishandled the succession to the Iron Throne.

A Reddit user said, "It seems like people miss the point in effort to defend 'their side'. In reality, the true villains (IMO) are Otto and Viserys. The two patriarchs of these families caused all of this. It's these two's fervent entitlement that leads to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in the centuries to come."

The fan added, "I think the far more interesting conversation here is questioning how the patriarchal feudal society plague by male primogeniture collapses in on itself due to the egos of its leaders".  One Reddit user wrote, "I find it cringe and childish for a show that is adult oriented".

Another Reddit user said, "From an entertainment point of view, the debate between Blacks and Greens is really interesting, but the fact that some people take it as serious as if we were really forced to pick a side, makes the viewing experience less compelling. Both teams are full of incredibly interesting, gray and dynamic characters, in fact, there is not a single one that I don't enjoy watching or that bores me."

However, some fans did appreciate it as a great marketing tactic. A Reddit user said, "I personally really like the idea and think it's a good marketing tactic even if it doesn't fall in line with the message of the story"

What is the significance of the colors Green and Black in 'House of the Dragon'?

In 'House of the Dragon', Green and Black represent the colors associated with two different houses. Green holds significance for the Hightower house, where it serves as a warcry for their soldiers. Alicent also appears in green attire for Rhaenyra's wedding in Season 1 as a sign of disapproval of the wedding.

Black is traditionally associated with the Targaryens at Dragonstone, and Rhaenyra appears dressed in this color at the tourney celebrating Alicent and Viserys' wedding.

As the second season begins, most members of the Green faction are currently in King's Landing, and most members of the Black faction are at Dragonstone.
